I seem to get a howling noise when slowing down,it happens just above 20MPH. I get it both when using my brakes and when not using the brakes. Can't really tell if it is coming from the rear or from the engine. No running problems. I have turbo boost gauge, transmission temp and EGT all read well. Any thoughts. Fully covered but love my truck, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

i noticed the same thing about a week ago. truck has 35k now and seems to running good. i thought it might be the tires but after reading your post im not sure.

what type of trans do you have? don't know if that could be the problem? in a manual you just might be hearing the low rpm's of the gears in the trans. maybe the driveshaft could not be balanced right? do you have the death woble at high speeds?

Mine is doing the haunted howling sound which I had trouble figuring out also. Seemed to be rear sometimes, turbo sometimes , or transmission. Took to dealer and mechanic when for ride with me and he said turbo and that he had replaced 2 of them in last couple weeks. 2004. 5 600 . When we got back to shop he pulled intake boot off of turbo and you could move turbin and shaft up and down. Started motor and when shutting off the turbo would make a shuttering sound but not real loud or heavy sounding. They have ordered new turbo.

car-man1, please let us know if turbo replacement resolves your problem. I have same howl when the engine winds down - it does it in drive, park and neutral - I'm no mechanic and don't have very much knowledge regarding these trucks, but I think that must leave the howing up to the engine/turbo/exaust... Good luck...

alright, just went out and checked shaft on turbo. not to good. shaft will move up at lest a 16th. i have mods and not sure if warrenty will cover it. if not what turbo will be a good up grade. i tow alot and dont hve the cash for twins. i will be in louisville ky after xmas. anyone know of a good shop in the area. thanks for the help

just came back from taking out the trash. not convienced tha the turbo is making the noise. when rolling with the clutch pedal depressed the howling still comes and goes rith at 20 mph. does not howl when excellerating. with truck in any gear coast through 20mph it will howl. how could this be the turbo if truck is not in gear and still makes the same howling. the rpms are consistant. not sure if i am getting point across.

There should be a small amount of up and down play in the turbo, the bearings in it are the same design as the crank bearings(the shaft rides on oil while the engine is running) as long as the wheels are not rubbing on the housings, your turbo should be fine. My bet is it normal unloaded geartrain whine.

Sure its not the same or near the same noise described as the hoot owl noise. Its from the mid shaft bearing in the driveshafts.

Not really. I have the hoot owl noise and I have a regular cab. I've had it from day one and is only prominent when colder temps are present. It sounds like its comiing from the turbo but if I was to bet money I would put it on the driveline. JMO

Mine makes the same howling noise, just above 20 mph when slowing down with the clutch pushed in or engaged in neutral. I don't think it is turbo related it sounds more like gear noise. After driving for an hour it doesn't do it so I think it is cold related. I hadn't thought of the center bearing but the sound could be coming from there too.

Mine made a strange noise a few weeks ago after sitting in deer camp for a week without being run. When I started up the road it made a noise that was sort of a howl but more like a sheet metal "drone". It did it at about 20 mph, lasted for about 5 seconds and never came back. It was cold and snowing at the time. Cold seems to be the only common factor here.

I've got the same symptoms... howl at 10-20 mph, more noticeable at colder temps, only 10k, etc. I think its the carrier bearing... gonna find out as it goes in tomorrow, along with the weatherstripping issue  Hope to have some answers before too long. I'll post any findings...

I have a 98 QC 12V that started doing the howl. I started by checking everything that I was capable of checking, set the truck on jack stands front and rear and examined the drive shaft(s) u-joints, center shaft bearing and wheel bearings.

All good as they say. Next was to remove the rear drive shaft from the diff and that's when I discovered the problem; The rear diff pinion nut had loosened off.

Remove diff cover and inspect for damage(none), clean, loctite and re-torque nut, dye check gear mesh pattern(O. K. ) and re-assemble diffcover and oil.

Truck was good as new, not counting the bombs :-laf .

HP.

PS:relatively new here, any advice on getting a signature set-up that so many have?

Now that it is nice and cold in the mornings, I've been hearing the howl. I think it is the turbo, but it almost sounds as though the pitch is too low. Then I think about the baffles in the intake causing the pitch to be lower.

Then I started wondering is it maybe the fan. After the truck gets up to operating temperature, the howl seems to go away. When it is there, it is certainly engine speed dependant, but most noticeable at reduced throttle at around 30-40 mph when all I want is to maintain that speed.

Picked up my truck today after new turbo installed by dealer. It has a little howl to it but not near as bad but the temperature was warmer outside compared to when I took it in. I did look at the old turbo to look for external differences and it is the same as new. Will have to waite until temp gets colder to see if that makes a change. Truck does not seem to have the same large power surge when the turbo comes on with the new turbo replacement. I hope they are not putting some less aggressive turbo on for replacements. The mechanic said the first thing that he was asked when he talked to Dodge or Cummins (starlink?) about turbo going out was is there debree in the inner cooler . One of the other 2 turbos he had recently replaced in other trucks had shavings downstream.
