I have heard that, also I have heard, the sponsored trucks don't give breakage reports. So here is what has happened since March. 7500 miles ago.

The original valve body was faulty and so ATS sent me another. Briar Hopper installed it and all was great afterwards. I did end up with a new PCM that I bought (1998 12v auto p/n) so that I could have a dash. I still have the ABS and BRAKE idiot lights on.

The transmission has stock shafts, increased clutch packs ATS TripleLok and valve body. I have a dash mounted switch for lock up.

I, with help from a great welder and engineer, installed a B&M pro ratchet shifter and custom console with Auto Meter trans gauge. We eliminated the transmission coolers, as they were blocking the air flow to the radiator and intercooler. We mounted one under the driver's side that has a thermostat controlled fan. I see normal temps of 140 degrees with the sensor in the transmission pan. On 90+ degree days in town I see 160. If I choose not to use lock up, then I can get as high as 180 degrees. I saw an all time high of 220 after a burnout and long stage at the track.

Which gets me to the important issue of performance. I have close to 100 launches in 4wd, locking up in 1st gear. I have launched with as much as 30 lbs of boost. The third gear band tends to slip if the TPS isn't set just right, and I have to reset the TPS after I remove the pump. Maybe the band just needs an adjustment.

As for regular usage, I have pulled trailers, nothing outrageous and the transmission performed well. I also have a 2000 ft drive through a cornfield to get back on my property. It is really rough in spots so I idle the distance, locked up. That enables me to keep the transmission temps under 160 degrees. I did some stump pulling and being able to lock up helps tremendously.

I have given countless rides and all seem to be amazed. I can manipulate the throttle so that there is zero RPM drop when locking up, both visually and by sound. I have smooth shifts under light throttle and firm shifts at heavy throttle. Tom has riden with me several times and if he doesn't watch me shift, he doesn't know when the truck shifts or goes into lockup. Impressive!

I am saddened by the horrible conversations and loss of great personalities by the transmission threads on the TDR. People that I have known for sometime started acting like childish buttholes due to the release of ATS. It's a shame. Whether you like the fights or not, it's agreeable that all those threads got silly. I refuse to comment further on this thread unless it is a question related to the transmission's performance. Thanks.

How is the fuel mileage now VS. 5speed? and would you do it all over the same? yesterday I had my TC really slip for the first time:( so upgrades are getting closer!

Great report Eric!! I am one of the many who has

ridden in his truck and can say the ATS transmission

performs excellent!! I am in the process of ordering

one from Tom @ "Black Mountain Diesel. "

Clint called me this morning to see how my trans was holding up and performing. I now have about a 1000 miles on it and thus far I am very pleased with the performance. Initial takeoff is much stronger than before. Shifts are quick and smooth. No complaints about the trans so far.

Eric, why are the idiot lights glowing?

I think it has something to do with how the '98 12v, autos had a different pcm then the sticks right?

Eric,

Thanks for the update man!

The third gear band tends to slip if the TPS isn't set just right, and I have to reset the TPS after I remove the pump. Maybe the band just needs an adjustment.

Eric, I appreciate your attempt to update all of us.

At the same time, you might need to check with Tom or Don or Clint before posting.

There is no band applied in third gear. Therefore no adjustment is available to fix your problem.

The TPS ONLY controls the 3-4 shift and TC lockup. So your slipping 3rd gear clutch pack issue isn't related.

Are you sure you have 5 clutch frictions in the direct clutch or the normal 4? What size frictions were used? What idle line pressure are you running? Maybe we can all join together and help you get that fixed.

No flame to you Chris, but I like to know if there are ANY problems and what the cause and how they are handled. That also goes to the full evaluation of a product. I know everyone has some problems from time to time and I like to know what to expect

Thanks for the update

Tom

Chris is right as to the band not being used in 3rd. If there is slippage in the 3rd clutch, adjusting the band won't help. Chris asked some good questions.

The TPS is used as an input to the PCM to give throttle angle or position for the control of governor pressure (on RE models) and lock up and 3-4 as Chris stated. Line pressure is not affected by TPS setting or output. As such, it would not affect a slip.

As 3rd gear is a clutch not a band, I believe Chris's intent was only that contacting ATS would only allow for a more accurate post and not to allow for altering of the reporting of facts.

Keeping the accuracy just helps prevent confusion. My . 02.

No Problem

Inarush76

Not being a transmission guy I was just thinking if all the problems were handled before posting I might think something was wrong if I got an ATS and it needed some adjustment or something. I hope that makes sense as I was not trying to question anyones integrety.

Because of Chris' and your post adding technical accuracy, I have learned a little more about these things.

Tom

Jim S- I have seen a 3 mpg drop in fuel milage. I would not do it over if I had to, too much a hassle!

Bob- I don't think we all should, but I do.

This thread isn't about your transmission, although I'm not shocked that it's doing well, consider the manufacturer.

I believe it's a fault in the RWAL sensor. It's been really hard figuring that one out.

Greg- I don't have a digital camera, sorry.

Chris- thanks for the tip. Hopefully Tom will step in here and answer those questions. They probably told me that, I probably wasn't listening or I forgot :). Understand, I'm not a transmission builder, just a consumer.

Interesting that you say there isn't a fix for the problem. Because when I tighten the TV Cable (on edit, wrong terminology), third gear stops slipping, so am I fixing the symptom or the problem?

Eric,

Is your TV cable adjusted so it's all the way forward at idle and all the way back at wide open throttle? I had to tinker with this on mine after my new trans install. A little adjustment of the cable makes quite a difference in shifts.

Koa Man:

Wesley, I am glad to hear your ATS is performing well

for you!! I am getting ready to put one in my 96'.

Bob Wagner:

My comment about the "launches" Eric had posted

was directed to "jetpilot"; not you! And only he would

know what I meant by it! Also, I never said anything

about any other transmission shop or manafacturer.

Glad to hear yours has been flawless for 15 months!

not only do you need to look at TB cable adjustment but base and swing voltage of the TPS. both relate to each other.
