Howdy... . I am a newbie to TDR. I was wanting some advice on a mod I am looking to install on my daily driver. My 05 Ram is hungry for more air... I was thinking doing a compound set up with the stock HX40 and a HT3B. Anyone have any wisdom for me?

Designing compound turbochargers is complex and not as easy as just adding a second turbo if you want the best results. There will be a lot of piping to make, exhaust, compressor side, oil feed and drain. You will need to change the exhaust manifold to the Second-generation 24-valve type for space reasons. Also, you don't currently have an HX40 if you have the stock turbocharger, and the stock turbo will be rather hard to adapt and is not sized well for use in a compound turbocharger configuration. John Todd of BD Power talks about his turbocharger development activities each year at May Madness. He really knows his subject, having forty years of experience.

I was under the impression that the trucks stock turbo was an HX40. Like I said I am learning :) What would you recommend for a cost effective compound setup?

If you haven't bought stuff already, the BD twin turbo kit is cost effective. Add the value of two custom turbos, size matched for their roles, all the piping, air box and filter, exhaust manifold, down pipe and you will see that their price is reasonable and the stuff is all designed to work together. I chose the BD setup largely because of John Todd, who obviously knows his stuff very well.

From the factory my turbo has a stamp plate on the compressor housing that reads Holset HX40-35. What kind of turbo is this if it is not an HX40?

it had a removed chip because the switch was still in the dash. It also had a magnaflow muffler. Nothing more. I am researching this alittle myself... .

I couldn't tell you my truck is in texas and I am in missouri. I will post a picture of the turbo when I get back to my other computer.
