Blue Smoke @ Cold Start

Did it yesterday. Still don't have a real opinion of it. The little I've driven the truck I can't really notice a difference. The lag is way slower. Still can't run the TST on 9/9. Even more black smoke then before. Here's the good things. TST on 9/8 or 8/8 hauls azz. Having the torque up that high is probably causing the smoke cloud. (Not good in CA). Temps seem to be a little cooler. On the top end they are down 200º or so. In the middle they're about the same as stock. Turbo whine is about the same loudness. But crisper. The truck finally feels like everything is working on the same page. With the AirDog, TST, and tubo. Just feels and sounds better. Smooth acceleration. It will pin you in your seat. It does break the tires loose shifting in to 2nd. (with an auto). I haven't towed with it. It does bark a LOT easier. So far I'm 70/30 on liking it. Didn't take that long to put in. About 4 hours. Would have done it in 3 but I second guessed myself and re took it out after installing it. I went with the HTB2 62/12 (clipped so it acts like a 62/13). I'll know more with the more I drive it.

One thing that friggen drove me nuts was the lack of quality in the down tube. My 90 year old grandma could weld better then that. It was nice having it to use, but what a pile. They need to take a serious look at getting that done right. Have it mandrel bent and made out of stainless steel. They are awesome people of there to talk to. Call them and they're super helpful. But I'd personally be embarresed to mail out that down tube, let alone charge $100 for it.

can i get an update please... im looking into MAYBE getting a new turbo...

thanks

Grant

Update after a year and half... Love it! Would do it again in a heartbeat. Period. Really wanted to keep this turbo as the top in a set of twins. But logistically it would have been a nightmare. Sometimes I wish I would have done a 62/14 but that's just me and my goal. Which is why I'm going to twins. But overall, super, super happy.

You made a comment that the turbo was much more susceptable to turbo bark. Have you addressed the problem? After spending some time driving with it are you able to avoid conditions that make it bark? Thanks! Eric

I got the HTT SP66/14 and I can only go to 2/2 on my TST. If I go over that, it looses power big time. With the stock clutch, it would slip a little on 1/1, slip bad on 2/2 and not slip at all on 3/3 or above. I tried it on 8/8 once and it felt weaker than stock. It may be my CP-3 holding me back. But my egts will hit 1500 on 2/2 with my other mods. I was kinda expecting the turbo to handle it a little better. But it is a great turbo and great people at HTT. Maybe twins is my only option now.

As far as the bark. Yea, I drive it differently now. Rarely do I bark it. If I'm on it hard then let off quick she'll do it. But normal driving it's fine.

With all my mods I did 520hp/1142tq and temps weren't an issue it's out of fuel to go even higher. 520hp on a 62/12 is impressive. That's letting off at 1500*. She still gets hot when driving on the street. I can't drive it at TST 5/5, like the dyno. But every day 2/2 or 3/3 I don't have to look at my EGT gauge. 4/4 I do have to watch it about if I'm at WOT or on it hard. I could probably do a 1/8 mile on 4/4 without temp issues but any longer holding it wide open it'll get cooking. I tow on 2/2 and don't really worry about it, I can climb with thst setting too. Good all around turbo!
