Anybody have experience with the HTBG turbo from High Tech Turbo? I believe this turbo is a Schwitzer turbo (S300G?) with a 62 mm compressor and 14 cm exhaust housing.

Paul from HTT said this is an excellent turbo for towing, anybody heard anything different?

I was told that the HTBG would be better for my application than the HTB2 that they have.

Thanks

Are you planning on putting more fuel in the truck anytime soon?

I had basically the same setup, except a Van Aaken box, and the stock turbo worked great. I RARELY EVER had to downshift to keep it cool (towing 12k over the grapevine in southern CA), and a couple hills on I-5 just before Oregon.

If you are still running too hot, then think about a good exhaust.

Mach 1. 5’s should be here tomorrow. I tow often and sometimes very heavy; for example 17 two year old horses which puts me over 30K gross. I also pull a 40’ in-closed CM trailer loaded with equipment that is very heavy. I have no problem getting the EGT’s to 1200 on small rolling hills in Texas with the stock turbo, 275’s and an EZ. I am upgrading my turbo in hopes that the extra air will allow me to either run 1. 5’s and enjoy the extra power or continue with the 275’s and not back off as quickly on the rolling hills. I personally start backing out when I go a little over 1100 degrees; I am not in that big of a rush and who knows, the gauge may not be 100% accurate so I don’t take any chances.

I think the exhaust would bring your current setup into the area you want it. But when you add the 1. 5s, that will give you the heat right back.

Even with the better turbo, I would still be looking into the full 4" exhaust if I were you.

Btw, I only just put my 1. 5s in this weekend, and I haven't towed with them yet. So I am watching to see what turbo you go with as that should be just about the same as what I want (I will be tapping my pump wire in the near future though).

Len,

In my research on the turbos (my Piers HX35/40 is going in before the end of the month, I promise) I found this website.

http://www.turbocalculator.com/index.html

You might want to purchase the software and do the calculations.

I am wishing I had done some more research. I have an email in to Piers, asking for technical specs for their turbo, but no responce yet. JR doesn't have the sofisticated "Turbo Dyno" necessary to produce the Maps for his turbo, so experience is his tool. If you talk with HTT again, maybe ask about the compressor Map for it, or see if it is the software, if you decide to order.

Good Luck,

Jeff

That turbo sounds like the HTB2 with a larger 14cm exhaust housing. My HTB2 worked great for towing on my truck and spooled very quick. It will cool more than a Piers 35 will. It actually cooled much better for towing than my current Sledpuller 66 due to having less lag. I actually think 1. 5s with the HTB2 would be an excellent combination without any EGT issues or smoke. I've installed 1. 2s and an EZ on my neighbors truck that he tows heavy with and he doesn't have any EGT issues using his stock charger so I know the 1. 5s and an HT series would work great.

I have the HTBG turbo and a 4” downpipe sitting in my garage waiting to install. I didn’t have time to work on it this weekend because I was busy installing a South Bend Con OFE.

I can honestly say that selecting a turbo has been the most complicated bomb I have attempted on this pickup and I still do not know if I have a good one for towing! I will install it either this weekend or next, depending on how much time I have available.
