Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Pressure Question

Do HTT quickdiesel 64/14's have adjustable boost elbows or is that adjustment made using the nut on the wastegate. Also if they are not adjustable would it be better to use the boost elbow that came with my edge comp to make more boost rather than mess with the wastegate? Basically im only making 35lbs of boost at most with this new turbo and i smoke like crazy at wide open throttle. Im not out to get more boost just want to get rid of the smoke and burn the fuel that I am putting in!

Any help is appreciated

-Alex

Throw the edge elbow in... . it is about the same as a adjustable boost elbow screwed all the way in. It should bump you up a little.

I really really appreciate the response your the first person that hasnt screamed UNDERFUELED!!!! Like i said Im not out to get more boost i just dont wont my truck to smoke if it dosnt have to!
Any other insight is also appreciated!! anybody have a similar problem??
thanks alot
-Alex

First off... I don't think you are under fueled for the turbo. With the comp on 5x5 and 100hp sticks you should be able to spin the turbo.

Before you start trying to crank up the boost, I would check very carefully that you don't have either a boost leak or an exhaust leak. Check the boots, especially the lower ones that attach to the intercooler. The fender skirts will rub holes in them, that can be hard to see. Make sure you don't have an exhaust manifold leak. They can be hard to spot, but if you see black on either the filter or the turbo's compressor blades, then you have a exhaust leak some place. Boost leaks can really shorten the life of a turbo.

How are your EGT's?

Just got the turbo and I havnt towed yet so im not sure, however the power is silky smooth. Spool is not much slower than stock, and with my 4. 10's I can't imagine towing would be a problem, def wouldnt hesitate to tow with it. And yes with the box turned down it dosnt smoke near as much, the smoking occurs the most with everything turned up... its just when i bought the turbo i was told that this would make plenty of air to burn my fuel and it still smokes like crazy!! I really wanted to be able to run everything at full tilt and see very little or at least drastic cleanup as soon as i hit wide open throttle but this is not the case?? I normally dont run it like this but when i do I want to take advantage of all the fuel im dumping... makes sense right?? As far as EGT's im not quite sure the readout on the water meth i have is a little tuff to tell exactly. they have dropped considerably though. Ill try to post something about towing as soon as I can but im currently still in college so it might take a little while.
thanks for all the suggestions guys keep em commin!

Check for boost leaks and use the nut on the w?g are instead of a elbow because it only allows thw wastegate to open slower, if you get it in the upper 40's you need it to open right and not overrun your w/g limit. Try two full turns. Pressurize your system to check for leaks.

Same problem except flatlining @ 28#. I pinched the wg hose, same thing, made rod longer, no change. So I was thinking of changing the boost elbow to the edge one, but if there was no difference with the hose pinched what difference would a different elbow make. I'm wondering if the gate is missaligned or not fully closed? Any suggestions? I'm bumming out here, I wan't to dyno but not until I'm sure everything is at optimum. This turbo doesn't even have 500 miles on it and WTF is the deal? Thanks..... ?

does ur w/g rod hit ur oil return? that can cause a bind problem and hang it up. also be sure Smarty is on even #s when comp is on or too much timing!!

There's no binding on the rod. After I lengthened it 2 turns and no change, that night I adj rod back to orig position, then went 2 turns shorter - no change then 5 turns shorter no change#@$%! Spoke with Tim Barber (TRE Diesel Performance) whom I purchased "everything" from on Sunday, his customer service reply was "guess we'll be sending you a new turbo - something ain't right":D. Now that "IS" customer service. First we'll get on a conference w/HTT Tech Support sometime Monday and see what they can suggest. By the way I dynoed Sunday morning (see sig) going from 387 & 720 last fall up to present - I'm a happy camper :-laf

Joe-

You need to SHORTEN the rod. Not lengthen it, to put more spring presure on the gates to keep them shut longer.

Did apply shop air to check for shaft contact? I did when I installed mine. Would only contact under pressure. Had to whack the drain tube with a ball peen hammer to flatten it a bit, to clear.

AO-

I'm making 38# with mine. I can pretty much clear up the smoke, or make it turn gray on the top end. Gonna mess with the AFC starwheel a bit to clean up the light throttle smoke on accel.

My QD hits the wastgate at 50-51psi but is not cooling the egts like I would like, but I'm in the middle of some serious cam testing and it could be just alittle too much on one of the lobes... Any way, mine starts to move the boost gauge at 1500rpms and by 1650rpms it's gone... to the W/G setting. I think my agressive fueling gets ahead of the spool.
