This is a warning to those who are looking at HTT for a new turbo. I purchased a HTBG last year with the intention of an upgrade when my fueling (and funds) allowed it. I was told as recently as july that my HTBG (57/12) could be upped to a HTB2 a (62/14) for a fee of around $500. I purchased the HTBG under that promise only to find that last week when I called to have this done I was told it would cost over $1100 !!! more than double!#@$%! I asked why and they said its a big job and then spent most of the time trying to sell me a stainless 13cm housing. I would have just bought a 62/14 last year if I knew I would get screwed on the HTBG! Now I have to buy a totally different turbo and sell this one (probably at a loss). It still says the HTBG is upgradeable on the web site!!! Too bad, the HTBG is a great turbo for a mild truck, but I'll never buy another from HTT! I dont care how good they are.

I disagree with the gist of HTT being bad. They rebuilt a KSB1-B into a HTB2 (62/12) and charged mainly for the not swappable parts. They were very up front about what was and was not reusable BEFORE the work was done.

I would buy from HTT again.

That's all great...

What say you about the apparent bait and switch that HTT has pulled on the gentleman above?

I just talked to them when my 2nd 35 blew the seals out. Since I have the jacobs e-brake, I'm limited to the 35 exhaust housing and a hybrid. They offered to convert/rebuild mine for a lot less than a new one. I didn't have the time and took the new one. I'm very happy with how they handled it.

I just called them to ask what was up as I may have them rebuild/upgrade my old one as a spare in the future. He said the main upgrade from htbg to htb2 is the compressor. To upgrade from a 57 to the 62 is about $500. The turbine on both can be ordered as 12 or 14 and now the 13ss. The upgrade is assuming you have the turbine you want. To change both sides is a whole new turbo.

then why didnt they say that when I bought my HTBG? and at that rate, then the HTBG also has a negative trade-in value! I would be paying near as much as a NEW HTB2 to up the HTBG ? no thanks. Remember, the part I'm upset about is that even on the web site it says... "

An important factor to consider with your turbo purchase is an inexpensive upgradability.
We don't want you to grow out of your turbo in 6 months.
Our turbos can grow right along with your horsepower needs:
You can send in your S300G, HTBG or HTB2 we will upgrade your turbo to whatever size you choose. "
maybe those two statements shouldn't be together then!

You sure that they told you a 62/14 and not a 62/12? Most of the upgrading has to do with compressor side. They can reuse and recut the compressor housing, there isn't much they can do with the exhaust housings. I would contact them about upgrading to a 62/12 and I would bet that is quite a bit less. The turbine housing alone is probably 4-$500.

I was VERY specific when I asked the first two times. Once before the purchase and again in July. I was told that the old housings had a trade-in value so that offset the cost of replacement, I guess I should've got it in writing.

Yes you should have gotten in in writing. As far as I know the exhaust housings haven't had trade in values for some time, pretty much since the release of the 71 turbine sections. Cause they were slow to release those as they would either modify your turbine housing, or you could buy a new turbine housing. The exhaust housings can develop small cracks that functionally are ok, but when you try to turn them and someone sees a different crack if they do an exchange, it could get confusing. I have an HTBG with a 14 that I might trade ya housings for so you could get your 62/14.

Hey D Creed, Remember me? I asked a couple of weeks ago about injectors and HP. Called HTT as well about upgrading my HTB2 from a 62/12 to a 62/14 with a 71 turbine wheel. All the guy did was try to sell me a 13cmSS exhaust and a 64 compressor for $1100. He completely disagreed with what I originally wanted to do even though their website says my solution would work better. I think they are just trying to push the SS housings for bigger bucks. Maybe their phone guys are working on commission??

The SS housings are very very nice. I would like one on mine. Originally HTT would upgrade turbine housings and even modify them for a 71mm turbine wheel, but I think they started getting some back that were cracked and all. So it just wasn't worth the headache. Then you have the exchange deal, what happens when you get an exhaust housing back that is cracked in a different spot than yours? Another reason why they won't exchange housings. Can't say why they are pushing the 13SS so hard though.

I have a good story for you. I ordered a HTB2 64/65/14, TOO BIG. I got a 12 housing sent to me at no charge, still not gonna happen. I then got a 62/65/12, TOO hot! They sent me a 14 housing, still not happy. So they tell me about this beta turbo, a 62/71/14, sent it out to me & I fell in love. I kept that one for a cost of $300. DCREED, pm me.

I 'd have paid extra for the 13ss if they had offered it as an option when we were still talking about a reasonable upgrade price.

Yeah, but $1100 is just ridiculous when you could buy a brand new HTB2 62/65/12 or 14 for $1280 off the shelf.

I can get one(62/12) for $1099. !!! Again, I was told when I bought the HTBG that there was no cost diff when ordering between 12 and 14 housings and could switch anytime for cheap using my old one as an exchange. I was also told that the compressor could be upped to whatever and the fee was based on the size chosen but from $300-$600. again with exchange. so I SHOULD be able to go to a 66/14 for a grand ! NOT!!!
