Rusty Truck

I know this advice has been posted before, but I thought I'd bring it up again... .

Had to pull the rear wheels on my dually today and was surprised at the amount of rust I found between the hub and rim. This is on a 2 month old truck with only 1200 miles... . in sunny California!

There are almost no signs of rust anywhere else, so its not like they dunked her in the Pacific before delivery!

I was going to put anti-sieze or marine grease on the hubs... (someday when I got around to it,) but never thought it would be an issue this soon!

Those heavy wheels and tires are hard enough to remove without fighting rust where they center on the hubs.

So that advice I've seen once in a while about keeping the rust off the hubs is good even for brand new trucks!!!!

(I'll try to post a picture on the next post... tried to add one but it lost everything & had to start over)

Oh yea..... the other thing I learned today is that I'm going to have to make some sort of slidehammer thingamabob to pop off those durn center caps... . that under-the-seat tool was worthless! (Not that I took the time to look for instructions!)

Picture of hub, sorry for the quality, but you can get the idea...

(Had to compress it to almost 0 just to get it to post!)

Huh... so I should take mine off and put some anti-sieze compound on there already??

How does the rest of the underside of your truck look? Mine has rust everywhere (transmission, driveshafts, etc... . )

Maybe someone in the know will post exactly what we should be using? I have used both in the past but found anti-seize attracted less dirt, so thats what I'll probably continue to use.

Interestingly the wheel studs seem to have some sort of lube from the factory... too bad they couldn't have thrown a little something on the centering lip.

As far as other rust, still looks good underneath, just a slight haze starting on the non-painted items which fortunately aren't too many... .

I picked up my truck last week. I used 3 cans of Rustoleum semi-gloss black (plus a couple of cans of red-oxide primer) under my truck. I'm just about finished with it. Just in a week's time I was starting to see rust. I painted everything I seen that didn't have paint. All I have left to do is pull the rear tires and check them. I use anti-seize on the threads. I'll probably paint what I can and use anti-seize on the hub close tolerances.

I had the same problem and I posted it a couple of times. I used Never-Seize on the hubs and the studs. I have always heard that it's good practice to do it with alloy wheels, apparantly it also makes sense to do it with steel wheels as well. Those dually wheels are a real stinker to get off when they are rusted, mine were rusted to the hub worse than to each other.

Do yourself a favor and take off your rotors before it's too late. Take off the rotors, calipers and hub bearing and just bath that all in anti-seize. I just paid $330 +$50 for a $50 U-joint job and like 12 hours of my own time because my hub bearing was rust-fused to the knuckle. Seriously... .
