Competition What rpm to shift at when drag racing

R-N-R... ..... posted on here about a 15" wheel on a Dana 70 or 80. Now I have another question. How could we change a Dana 70 to a 5 or a 6 lug hub? Is there a 6 lug, or 5 lug wheel that would fit the Dana 70? Would all the internals have t change also. I would rather change the drum than build a wheel. Is it possible?

Sure there is . Cut the tubes off. Weld on what you want ,Chevy ,Ford whatever. Call Moser with the axle length. Opens the door to brakes, wheels, tires.

I guess what was looking for , Joe, is a easy, quick fix. I've gotten old and lazy.

Well I guess as much of a PITA as that is.....

It is the "easy" fix. :-laf

Honestly with our floating axles... I don't believe there are any 5 or 6 bolt floaters out there. I dont' think it's so much the axle that is the issues, it's more the hub/bearing assembly.

You might be able to find a GM with a lighter axle and have the center machined for our increased tube diameter.

I've never sat down and thought about it, let alone measure anything. Maybe a trip to a local junk yard will yeld some results.

Good luck!

I am with you on this one Preston!

Not sure which is the lessor of the two tasks though, custom wheels or custom hubs :D

I used to work at a shop called Gradys Extreme Offroad in Rancho Cordova, Im not sure if they are still around anymore but he used to sell 5 and 6 lug hubs that would bolt right onto Dana 60, 70, and chevy 14 bolt spindles, using the stock brakes. Basically they are exactly what you are looking for, the hard part might just be getting your hands on a pair.

Also, im not sure how much of a difference there is in drum size between 1st and 2nd gen dana 70's, but im running 15" wheels with slicks on my 89.
