Towing through LA region

Hey all,

I am accumulating more farm equipment and am going to get a trailer to move the tractor, bushog, utility vehicle, future backhoe, wood, culvert pipe, etc. I am looking at a 6 ton pull-behind tilt trailer, the Hudson HSLT18

http://www.hgrstrailer.com/trailers/hudson/equipment3.htm#hslt18

The tow vehicle will be a 1993 Dodge W-250 ClubCab LE with a heavy duty front bumper and winch which add about 425 pounds.

Anyone have experience with these trailers before? Is it too much trailer for my truck?

Thanks,

Brian

I have experience with a 10,000 LB Hudson tagalong it's a good trailer.

it's not too big for you truck but I would look into buying a Gooseneck version

they handle alot better.

Looks like a dandy trailer, 18 foot is just right for pickups. Your 1st gen. is also a good tow truck, the long wheel base and extra weight on the front will help. Some will say the 3. 54's are too high for towing, however I prefer them with the 5spd. Do you have any power mods? The first gen. is a little underpowered, stock. I think a backhoe will overload it, even a small one will weigh about 12,000 lbs. I see in the fine print, they advertise a 12,000 lbs pay load with (adequate hitch weight). This would be for a dump truck sized tow truck, the pickup would be over loaded. With some careful rigging, you can even use the front mounted winch to pull on dead loads.

Hudson Trailer

NLsaacs is right on. Your truck is not suitable to tow a backhoe, unless you purchase one of the very small variety. An he is also correct in saying that a "gooseneck" is the most effecient way to go. We have a lot of experience with Hudson trailers, and find them to be very reliable, well built and priced fairely. Your biggect concern probably is the "future backhoe".

Sorry I was vague on the backhoe. The future backhoe will be a Kubota L-39 which weighs 7,000 pounds. The Cat 416 will have to wait!

Do you think $4,300 is a reasonable price for the HSLT18?

If asking pricing information is out of line for the forum I apologize.

Brian

You shouldn't have any problem at all pulling the Kubota just make sure you have a good heavy receiver and hitch as far as price goes that sounds reasonable I paid 6,500 for my 40Ft Gooseneck and it had 5,000 miles on it when I bought it and was about 2 or 3 years old. It especially sounds like a good deal beings that it has a tilt bed. Good luck
