ATS Aurora turbos

Ok here goes.

Here's what mine does.

Check sig. for mods. hx 35/40 hybred. (40 compressor wheel in the 35 housing).

When the truck shifts from 3rd to 4th (7/8 throttle opening) while the converter is locked. The turbo is pulling Approx. 40 psi, when it shifts the turbo psi drops to about 30 to 25 psi instantly with a little bounce in the neddle.

Does the same thing when it goes into lock up at 7/8 to full throttle in 3rd or 4th. Seems like it pulls the engine RPM's down quickly. Sometimes at WOT when it locks up it drops the RPM's almost 750 rpm . Yikes the sound is Really loud when it does that.

The sound ? Hmmm?

Bark or Huff?

Mines more like a cough, a dry cough,( no phlem) sorry about the visual.

It coughs about 3 or 4 times (kah , kah kah kah )The boost neddle bounces in unison with the coughing event.

The boost builds very fast right back up to 40psi and then I have to back off the throttle cuz I'm going way too fast for

So. California freeways.

Is this the "bark "?

Does this spell D E A T H for this awsome little turbo?

If this is a certain death how can I stop the Cough/Bark /Huff.

Got any Cough medicine?

thanks

I had the same exact thing happen with mine. I is known as a bark. Huffing a turbo is killing it. I was told to remove the silencer ring and adjust boost to 36 psi max. No more problems.

I also have a hx 35/40 my truck huffs or barks very bad. I was told that its to small of turbo for the HP that the truck is making the last time I dynoed it was 431 HP. When I pull a load and it up shifts into 4 it will start barking until I back way out of it. This truck will bark almost as bad not pulling a load.

Ring to be removed..

Ok easy to remove the ring.

But I checked my waste gate by putting shop air to the wastegate actuator with an adjustable regulator.

The wastegate opens at 36 lbs . the rod moves about 50 thou. give or take a thou.

Is this the correct adjustment?

What next?

I put the heavier AFC spring in and it helped the "barking " at part throttle.

Only the heavy spring kills the low to mid power & smoke. .

Power comes on real strong above 20 psi when the AFC is finnally open. Yeeee hAAAA.

Kinda saves the drivetrain and tires.

My ATS trans shifts so nice yet firm just the way I like it, but I don't think my turbo likes it.

I did the install.

I purchased the rebuilt-ballanced Hx 35/40 hybred turbo .

The install was a piece of cake.

The old turbo with 200k miles did not spin nearly as free as this new one.

I had no idea this turbo would be capable of over 40 psi boost.

I did forget to mention that I am using my old Banks 14cm wastegated housing.

EGT's don't appear to be an issue yet. :D

No More Bark. Time for more Bite.

Ok

I managed to "De-Bark" .

I installed an ATS exhaust manifold. (mine had shrunk to the point of blowing out the #1 and #6 gaskets. )(The freezer and oven trick worked great!)

Removed the Silencer ring as suggested.

My wastegate was not working correctly. Like over 40 lbs of boost. (the rod only moved about 1/16 of an inch with 38 lbs of boost. )

So I adjusted the wastegate by making the rod longer.

This reduced the amount of pre-load on the rod and allows it to open sooner and wider. (it was only opening maybe 1/8 at the flapper valve. )

It now opens about 3/8 of an inch at 38 lbs of boost.

My wastegate actually works now!

My boost is now limited to about 32 lbs and I have yet to "Bark ".

I'll be shortening the rod a little going for the magic 36 to 38 lbs of boost.

It also seems to stay spooled up alot better during the Positive ATS shifts.

:D

She seems to run smoother too.

:)

What is the freezer and oven trick ? anyone?

Used to assemble the ats three peice exhaust manifold. You freeze(shrink) the peices that have to go inside the other peice(s), and the peice(s) that have something go in them you put in the oven and heat(expand) so everything will go togother better.

I just wanted to add here that that bark is a compressor stall, very bad for the turbo. I'm glad you found the fix, cuz continued abuse could get very expensive.

Oh makes sense I thought they came in one piece and that you would freeze the manifold and then heat the bolts to get the more torque on them. That was my guess anyway. THANKS
