Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) huge air filters

anybody out there familiair with the air filter paper elements that us 98. 5 24valvers could use that are out of the real heavy duty semi tractor trailers ? the elements have so much paper to volumes of air area that wouldnt you think that that it would be less restrictive ? anybody with any comments or part # i seen another member with this set up just the factory airbox had to be removed and ducted in with the duct.

You must be talking about a BHAF.

Welcome to TDR! There is a paper air filter that we refer to as a BHAF (big honkin air filter) Fleetguard # AH19037(?) It is made by other manufacturers as well (Wix, NAPA, Balbwin etc) If you do a search you will find lots of info on it incuding part numbers for the different companies. It is a paper filter with a large diameter. This allows greater air flow due to the large surface area. It filters well, being paper, and lowers EGT's. I have them in both my trucks and really like them. On my 2nd Gen, I removed the factory air box, put the rubber air box nuts back on the studs and just let the filter sit on them. Hope this is what your looking for.

I just installed one . A CarQuest (Fleetguard # AH19037) equiv. bout $45. As per TMWeber, I installed the same way. The inlet Collar fit perfect and was made of strong hard plastic, I tried to crush it but couldn't, I just used the stock clamp. There was a bit more whine from the turbo but worth the noticable flow. . I need a jake brake now . . lol

TDR#37, p. 26 has tests of a lot of filters including BHAF and a Fleetguard so big it would barely fit with the passenger side battery removed. Bottom line is that the aFe was best for hp. AFE claims the filtration of their ProGuard 7 is better than stock. My dyno tests of the second gen filter box/filter showed that under 500 hp, the stock setup with the fender collar removed is as good as it gets for hp, except for the extra 5 hp from the afe radiused inlet.

Can you explain why you think that is? The AFE and BHAF can flow more CFMs. Is it because the stock box protects from hot air best, when the truck isn't moving. Did the AFE tested have a sheild/box setup?

Too bad they didn't test a Fleetguard or any BHAF.



But it did show the true colors of the K&N.



The Baldwin filter had a pretty good showing overall.



Suprizingly it also shows that the AFE pretty middle of the road.
