Hummer to Get Duramax Diesel

November 19, 2004

For the 2006 model year, the Hummer H1 Alpha gets more performance from GM's Duramax diesel engine. The Alpha's 6. 6-liter turbodiesel is rated at 300 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. Its four-wheel-drive system works in conjunction with a five-speed Allison automatic transmission. All 2006 H1s will be Alpha models, according to Hummer. Performance is claimed to be three seconds faster to 60 mph with the uprated engine. Currently, it takes 13. 5 seconds to get to that speed.

The Alpha will ride two inches higher than other H1s, and will have an improved interior that bowed on the 2004 H1.

Actually, the H1 is the original military Humvee that used the old 6. 2 and/or 6. 5L GM diesel. I'm surprised it took them this long to convert to the Duramax/Allison.

Other than appearance, it has almost nothing in common with the Tahoe-based H2 civilian Hummer. Until they change the floorpans on the Tahoes and Suburbans, I don't believe the Allison will fit under the H2's transmission tunnel.

Thats what I was thinking too. The H1 frame design won't change so they will have to use the current transmission or one that will fit in the current frame space.

'bout time.

I wonder though, why the 300/520 rating? Why not the LLY with the new 605 ft lb rating? If I was going to buy one, I'd be cheezed off if'n someone with a 2500 D/A pickup had a more powerfull engine at 1/3rd the price. Oh well, its all academic to me since although I think the H-1's are cool (H-2's are a joke), I can see no real reason to have one for my purposes.

Dave

I agree, it's about time. Why they won't figure out a way to put the D-max in the Suburban, and H2, is beyond me. I bet they'd sell the heck out 'em.

Dave,

As far as the H2 being a joke, that may be a little harsh. I've been 4 wheeling in one and was quite impressed with it's capability with it's locking diffs. That being said, I'd much rather have an H1 than an H2. I've driven an H1 on an obstacle course and that was fun. One of those, with a D-max would be in my garage if I had money to burn. Of course if I had money to burn, I'd pull the D-max and drop in a HPCR Cummins! Or maybe a new Power Wagon with a Cummins transplant, or... oh nevermind. I can dream can't I?

Maybe the H1 drivetrain can't handle the additional torque? Those ported axles are 1. 9:1 ratio... that's an awful lot of torque at the wheels!

i met a guy that had a duramax in an avalanche 2500 it cam with the 8. 1 gasser he took that out and droped in a duramax it was pretty sweet

Yeah, it probably is a little harsh. They are a decent truck, it's just that they are no more a real Humvee than any other sport ute; It's all cosmetic. I just can't see paying that kind of money for a facelift on a suburban! Oh oh! I think I might have been harsh again!

Cheers,

Dave

Well I'd say it's about dang time. I always balked at the fact that you could pay $90,000+ dollars for one of those trucks and only get a 6. 5 diesel, which I guess was an improvement over the 6. 2. Tough truck but the engine sounds like the pistons are swapping cylinders. eek.

Dave,

Come on man, they're not much more than a fully loaded Suburban are they? Get one. Just kidding. I agree.

BTW, how do you like your CRF250X? That's what my brother rides. I ride blue ('04 WR450F).

I love the bike. The suspension is like magic and it is just really easy to ride. Lots of fun. Like any bike, it can't be good at everything; it doesn't have quite enough umph to make it as an A level race bike. I just picked up a Gas Gas EC200, so I'll see how that compares. The WR's are nice bikes too. The 450 is too much for the tighter courses where I live, but they rock in the more open stuff.

Cheers, and remember to keep the shiney side up!

A few months ago there was a guy who took a couple of new Chevy's and pieced together a Dmax Suburban. I believe the vehicles were damaged and purchased very cheaply.

Interesting that only the alpha civilian version is getting the durapad. I assume that the military version will probably keep the 6. 5 mechanical engine. This tells me that the electronic engines are not reliable enough for the military. You need a reliable ride if your being shot at. I never thought of a 6. 5 as reliable either. The extra HP would be nice in a heavy armored H1 for a quick get away. I bet the duramax introduction is partly because of emission standards. I doubt that the 6. 5 will pass the 2005/7 standards and I bet all the civilian H1s will be 6. 6s by 07

Are the military humvee's actually going to have a true turbocharger with the d max or another hydraulic blower

The reason that they haven't put the duramax on suburbans yet is because the allison doesn't fit under the transmission tunnel. The HD trucks have a body lift to fit the alison. They are currently testing the duramax in suburbans with a body lift but no word on when they'll be out.
