i justed picked up a set of take-offs from a hummer h2. i thought everybody said they were a direct fit. well , they do not fit over the hubs, looks like about a 1/16 has to be removed from the wheel.

what gives guys.

i don't recall ever hearing they were a direct bolt on. everyone here has machined off/milled off/grinded off/sanded off that 1/16" to make them fit

i guess i just jumped the gun. pulled all four and had to put them back on for now. they center themselves with the lug nuts, so they do not have to ground with a percision machine. correct, or am i wrong again.

thanks for the help guys. guess i will go get the grinder

I thought I read a thread that said the wheels were "hub" centric meaning the center on the hub, not the lugs. Seems like it on my 03 3500 SRW with aluminum rims, I had to apply anti-sieze to them so I wouldn't have to knock them off with a sludge hammer at every rotation!

does this mean is you just ream out the center with a grinder so that there is no interferance with the hub-it is then lug ecentric. is that ok for our trucks, if properly balanced with a lug balancer machine?

did some more research. some think it is ok to ream the center hole out so that they fit over the hub and center it with the lug nuts, and others seem to think that is must be machined.

how about all that have them . who is using hummer wheels and rims. do you just grind away, or have it done.

it seems there is a perfect line to follow , it is a very little amount to remove, maybe one mm.

Kurt,

It is perfectly OK to open them up at home. I have them on my truck and did the work without a lathe.

Use a 4 3/4 inch hole saw mounted in a Hole Hawg drill. Come in from the front and start very slowly after centering the drill in the wheel. After you get through, sand the hole with a 2" drum sander on a drill motor. The finished size is about 4 7/8". Works great but go slow and easy.

Do a search on the DTR website for more info.

I have 'em. (and like 'em) I have the 315 Hummer tires as well and I like the combo.

This pic shows how they stick out a bit from the wheel wells. (look at the back tires especially) #ad

I used my lathe (even though it's a wood lathe) to open the center bore. I made my own chuck jaws to expand in the inside of the wheel, then used a gouge to carve it away slowly. (400 rpm translates to rotation at 40mph.

Every post I've seen has stated that the center bore must be machined just slightly to get them to mount up. Any machine shop should be able to do the work at a reasonable price.

looking for a set of h2 wheels

Ok you guys sold me. Where can I get a deal on some of these near or in Minnesota? It looks like the shipping costs more than the take-off wheel sets.

Ebay or a local Hummer dealer. They are running about $50 each.

I just picked up a set with tires yesterday...

Anyone know where to find a replacement center cap for the wheels? I like the look but don't want to come off as a Hummer wannabe. Even if I could afford the Hummer I'd still get a Ram!

Been calling around in my area and the cheapest set I can find (tires and rims) is $500. 00. Does this sound right or am I looking in the wrong places? One dealership wanted $1400. 00 for the set!

I've seen em go cheaper, but $500 is probably about (or less) than just ordering the tires from TireRack. You're getting mounted, balanced tire/wheel combo for a good price.

Mine were cheaper, but I had shipping and balancing on top of it.

Despite what he posted I think bighammer will agree with me that $500 is a very good price for a set of tires (assuming they are OEM H2 tires, 315 BF Goodrich AT's) and a set of H2 wheels especially if they are amounted any balanced. It appears as though bighammer thought you were just talking about the tires.

FWIW - The cheapest I have seen a set of take-off tires and rims sell for is $450.

I just got a set of H2 wheels and tires back from the machine shop. They milled out the center bore for me. They were for my fathers truck, but without a little lift on his 1998 with running boards they just don't have quite enough room. If he pulled the running boards I think they would be ok.
