A couple of years ago My dad changed the carrier bearing on his 96. Just recently we noticed that there was a major himming noise coming from that area. We know for sure that it is not the carier bearing. He needs to depend on the truck every day and he needs help. He dosnt have a computer so i am asking for him. Does any one have a clue or lead us in the right direction, if so thanks.

Ya i did forget to mention that i was in a hurry. The humming is when you are under power( in drive), and when you put it in neutral it quits. It sound like it is coming from the transmission or transfer case. sorry i forgot to mention that, I can only talk to him by phone so might not get all the info right away.

Not sure if your "humm" is my "whine", but the noise on my drivetrain was definately tied to the OD in the 47RE automatic. For example, on my truck, coasting at 35 mph with no throttle (with not much engine, turbo, or road noise to mask it), I could toggle the drivetrain whine on and off with the OD lock-out switch. My noise was a failing bearing in the overdrive and was alarmingly rough once it was out and one could try to spin it by hand.
