A buddy of mine wanted me to ask ya'll what could have caused his truck to hang in 5th gear. He said he left home going to work and had already went thru all the gears going down hwy after he left his house. When he got in to town to stop at light his trk would'nt come out of 5th. He ended up driving it to work like that as that was the only stop he had to make. He said when he left the light it was kinda downhill and got it going enough to take off in 5th. He called someone to come get him with a trailer after work and while he was waiting on them he pulled shifting tower off and took a pry bar and pryed on shifting fork and something popped real loud. He said that he pushed clutch then and it was fine. He drove it home with no problems. It didn't hang anymore or anything. He was afraid he had broke the input shaft when it popped but evidently not because he drove it home. Anybody else had this happen or know what might have caused it. Sorry so long. Thanks Kelly PS--His trk is a 98' 3500 2 wheel drive with 12 valve motor.

please tell me he's not using 5th now that everything's "fine"!!!

it could be something as simple as worn/missing shift fork pads (seen it happen on the 5th/rev fork on these trannies) especially if he rests his hand on the shifter while going down the highway.

anyhow, tell him not to put it back in 5th till he has the transmission gone through... that's just asking for trouble IMHO... does he have any problems w/ popping out of reverse or a hard time getting into reverse?

I guess it COULD be a 5th gear nut that's backed off just enough to cause an odd gear alignment, but not enough that the gear is off the splines on the main shaft.

I don't see how this could affect it sticking in gear. The syncro for fifth is on back of the lower shaft and it's function *should* be totally independant of what's happening with the gear.

Being it's 2wd it'd be a good idea to pop the tailhousing off and check it out. Not difficult to do and you would be able to see most of it. I would guess the trouble is either in the forks/shift cover as Forrest suggested, or the syncro with the little coil spring keepers in the back.

SRadke, you where right. My buddy just now got around to checking out his trans. He has been driving another truck. Yesterday he pulled the trans. out and the one of the syncro's and the little spring under it was broke in half. If wedged against the tail housing, that was the reason it was hung in gear. Anyhow, you can't buy just the syncro and little spring around here, you have to buy the whole syncro kit they call it which has the syncro gear (I guess that is what you call it,it is round and has teeth on it)and all in it and it is $500 dollars. Do you or anyone else know where to get just one little spring and the little syncro or tab that sits on top of the little spring. Surely somebody sells these by themselves or has some laying around somewhere. It didn't damage the tailhousing or anything else. It made a small indention in the tailhousing where the little tab or spring dug into it. Can't find anymore damage anywhere. The little syncro or tab was broke in half and so was the little spring that goes under it. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. If ya'll know where I can get the little spring and the little syncro or tab, please let me know. Thanks again, Kelly

The same thing happened to me in August while pulling race car to Indy. I bought the parts to fix it from Quad 4X4 very nice people. Theys sell just the blockers and springs for about $6. 00.

Good luck

Thanks for the help guys, my buddy ordered 3 little tabs and 3 springs for $6. 00 from quad 4x4. He should be back in business now. I appreciate the info.

Thanks, Kelly

Yep, had the same problem myself. Wasn't broken springs though. Took them out and stretched then a little and it was fine after that.

Tricky boogers to get back in for sure.
