Well, I like to call myself a die-hard hunter, but I pale in comparison to some of you guys - makes me very envious to see some of these photos and hear the stories!
My Grandfather started me out by taking me deer hunting when I was 8 (got to carry my own . 410 Single Shot with slugs), although the area we hunted had pretty much been hunted out (has been closed to deer hunting for many years since). We also did some squirrel and rabbit hunting. I never saw a deer until several years later - probably 10 or 11 years old. My Grandfather passed away (from a firearms accident - loaded rifle fell . . . ) when I was 12. That same year, I got my first 12 gauge, a Mossberg pump. Hunted by myself and with friends since. My dad has gotten back into hunting in the last 10 years - mostly quail, pheasant, etc, and it's nice to have family to share the experience with again. But everytime I go hunting, I remember my Grandfather and thank him again for sharing this wonderful heritage with me.
Now I hunt as much as possible (not near as much as I'd like). I am looking for a new deer lease (that's about the only way to hunt in TX without being shot at by other hunters). I love duck hunting too, but I moved here from NE Arkansas (where the hunting is awesome, mallards and woodies everywhere, flooded timber, etc. ). And the ducks here on the coast taste BAD (like fish) - I don't like to kill what I don't eat, excepting varmints and out of control feral hogs.
Another member, 243, recently conned me and got me into reloading - so after about $1000 spent on that stuff (not to mention the new rifle, mainly for target shooting), I'm addicted. It's as bad as BOMB'itis. Gotta have the best of everything to be as accurate as possible, right??? My wife's gonna leave me or kill me one of these days . . . I have about 15 guns (blackpowder, . 22's, and pistols included), all in my gunsafe, next to my reloading bench - the rest of the room is full of hunting gear (waders, boots, jackets, gadgets, etc. ), a desk and computer to check out TDR and all of the hunting and shooting websites, and stacks of hunting and gun magazines and catalogs.
So now I hunt/have hunted deer, ducks, geese, quail, pheasant, doves, squirrel, hogs, rabbits. I hunt with bows, blackpowder, and reloaded ammo. I just joined a private range and plan to shoot at least 3-4 times a month. I will hunt just about anything if I have the opportunity - I really want to hunt Elk, Mulies, and Antelope some day.
Oh yeah, I like to fish too, but only when hunting season is closed!
Thanks to everyone else for sharing their stories - very pleasurable reading.
