Sounds like you are a bit overBOMBed. There has got to be a weak link somewhere. It looks like you've found it. That NV4500 is rated for 450ft-lbs, and how much stump pullin' torque are you running? 900 or so? DOUBLE the rated load, ouch!

Anyway, I have a Triumph TR-6 that is notorious for trashing throwout bearings. The mechanisim tends to stick which lets the throwout bearing slightly contact the pressure plate making a growling noise. The noise goes away when you push in the clutch. You never know!

Hey HVAC; really sorry to hear about the transmission. Totally surprised though -- that NV4500 is about the stoutest transmission out there -- sold all the time for heavy duty retrofitting. Take a long look at your new parts (throwout, etc) first. Even though it's "rated" at 450 lb/ft, it can take lot's more. Isn't it what "smokin' Dave Mitchell" has in his sled puller? He's putting out way more torque than even you -- and he's doing clutch popping power take-offs with 35,000+lb sleds! Maybe time to give him a call. Probably not gonna be as expensive as you fear.

(Hopin' to see success for a fellow bomber before I buy my injectors -- I'm running a centerforce dual friction myself -- wish I'd bought the McCloud dual disc)

Hello all, thanks for the sympathy #ad

It's good to see "CMECHANIC" make a cameo appearance! #ad
I didn't mean you'd be laughing at me "C", I was giving you credit for forseeing the problem (in my sarcastic, attempting to be funny way). I speak for everybody when I say it's a damn shame you can't share your knowledge here! #ad

Getting back to sarcasm now, I don't plan to go to another trans just yet. My instinct is that this problem is an anomoly. I tend to lug the engine down to 1100 since I have no load, the engine picks right up, but maybe this forces that input bearing one way under the torque. Maybe this grinds those ball bearings like grapes. I must have ground the hard face off. I tried to buy a transmission off a guy advertising in the classifieds but it was gone. I will try to fix this one and change my driving habits. Porky, there may be a large 269 pound gap where I otherwise woulda been.

Wow HVAC,
My condolences...
Was this the result of your showing me your monster on sunday? I thought 9 seconds seemed a bit high for the obvious power lurking in that beast. Perhaps it was going to parasitic drag in those bearings.
Hope dinner was worth it #ad
and goodluck.

I am still looking for a powerplant for my old suburban... ... #ad

CMECHANIC, thanks for the cameo... .

Hello you all!
Marco, thanks for the concern, this is just symptomatic of extensive bombing #ad

Wade, you won't see CMECHANIC much, I am glad he stopped by for a cup of coffee.

MAK, I will repair the 4500 for now, I agree with you about the the perceived sturdyness. Dave "Smokey" Mitchell is not putting the miles on that I am, the white truck is race only, you could fit a small child through the turbo he's runnin'. He does run more power and there are guys back there snappin' input shafts he said. One guy has had a new larger input shaft made for his truck.

Sorry Scotteh"01, I was havin' trouble with the site this AM. Looked a lot like a whiteout.

HVAC,
Didn't think I would seem on him on a regular anymore... but he's still keeping tabs.

Well Rammers, here is the predicament, fix the frail flimsey glass NV4500, or get a transmission with the capacity to hang with the Cummins as we climb the horsepower ladder???

Yesterday I went on a field trip to talk transmission trash with some of the would be local experts. Dodge in Redwood City was my first stop, their labor rate is $90. 00 an hour and the guy that rode with me did not instill conficence. Next I found a guy who specializes in manual trans repair, it appeared he had knowledge to bring to the party. If I pull the trans he could rebuild it for less than a grand. I have been thinking that the noises could be isolated to a particular component, but the transmission guy said that my ailment might not be spotted with a visual inspection, hence complete overhaul.

Options are what I want, so I went to a heavy duty truck repair shop and we talked about putting a "real transmisson" behind the "real motor". The complications involve the size of the bell housing and the fact that I am set up for a 1 1/4, 10 spline input shaft. The Fuller transmission uses a larger input shaft and that has to be a good thing. We are looking at several grand for a new 6sp Fuller trans and a new dual disc clutch. The feasibility has not yet been determined.

Please send donations to HVAC at .....

HVAC, one thought is to drain your transmission fluid and see how much metallic stuff is in the oil. Good way to confirm whether the problem is internal, or a TO or pilot bearing, although you seem to ascertain it's the transmission. It would be interesting to see whether the fluid contains minimal metallic residue (you're OK) or whether pieces of disintegrated bearing and gear teeth fall into the drain pan (time to spend some more $$$ #ad
)

Actually, you might have a PSD wrapped around your input shaft. Musta sucked the last one you stomped on up in the transmission #ad

I plan to drain the gearbox today Vaughn, we have been getting drenched the last two days. The onslaught has subsided and I am curious like you. Seems to me that last time I drained the transmission I pulled a couple bolts off the PTO plate, I may pull the plate off completely so I can stick my paw in there and dredge the bottom of the housing. Like you said, might be a PSD ground up in the gears! #ad
I will have to brush the NV4500's teeth or suffer further tooth decay. Maybe I should brush after every meal! LOL

I talked to Lawrence at DD today and he doesn't think my talking transmission is gonna
K-BOOM. He said he had a similiar problem with his truck. Seems that the condition manifests itself, but doesn't become terminal. I have noticed the noise increasing since I began the "battle of the
clutches". I will monitor the condition to
determine weather it's getting worse.

The fuller transmission does not have a 6th overdrive I have learned, and the gear spaceing may not be advantagous I may try to run this trans till I can get my hands on a 6sp.

Lawrence mentioned some technology which I found very interesting, comes from the NASCAR camps. Take the input shaft and all the critical bearings and sub cool them, no not in the freezer, were talkin' liquid helium and well below zero. This along with
shot peen stress relief of the input shaft may provide the margin of strength for us Bombers. Evidently it's rather pedestrian amongst the professional Bombers.

HVAC, I got a price on that transmission we spoke of the other day it's $1350. 00 with no core charges. It only had 6000 miles on it when 5th gear let go. It has a new 5th gear and bearing & gasket kit. Let me know if you want me to arrange getting it shipped to you.

Hmmmm...

Nowel, perhaps you should check out a used heavy duty automatic and rebuild it?

You may want to check "American Trucker" magazine and look in the ads. Lots of used and new transmissions for heavy duty applications. #ad

Evan, you notice how determined Piers O' the north is about keeping me subdude with my manual stigmatism? With my shifting, you could call me chunky! Where is Scott with that obvious straight line!!! LOL
Lawrence and his bodyguard and I met with Drivetrain Specialties. I'll elaborate in the AM. Who is this Ryan from parts unknown??

Hey Forrest!
You must be a primitive engine supporter of the "Scourge of the North". The Abominable Ram man.

You remember when we were talkin' clutches?
Well I mentioned the Centerforce is ???
I have a new case in point, 12v engine with lp and not a lot else toasted the oem clutch. Guy installed the Cf clutch and it almost lasted 2 weeks. He has the dual disc now with good results. FYI

Really!! Bummer. I wonder if he didn't break it in.

Uh Oh, I smell a bigger dent in the wallet coming up. I feel myself getting sucked into that $1200 dual disc, double throw down, U-Joint bender.

I wonder if one of the TST versions would be a lower cost alternative.

I hope to be camping in Washoe Valley, just North of Carson City. I'll be watching the southbound lane of 395 to see whose bumper is in front #ad

Forrest... The road at the top of the hill [just before it drops into CC. . don't remember the name] ought to a very good vantage point for the full washoe valley "race". . I'll buy the beer and peanuts. . Gary
ps. . suggest you guys run the radar dector as ol'smokey loves this spot for the out of staters
