Is there an adapter that will allow me to connect 4" right to this turbo? What should I do to this turbo prior to install I hope to get around 400HP and it's currently a stock HX35 turbo. It will go on a 1st gen motor and I need injectors as well. Any suggestions? Thanks

An hx 35 is not what you want for 400hp... ... Call the turbo vendors, tell them what you are trying to acomplish and how you will be using your rig to get a correctly sized turbo.

Bob is very right, the HX35 is not a 400 hp turbo. My truck has DDP Stage 3 injectors, which i highly recommend, and is too hot when i get on it. I have a Dodge 4" downpipe which starts at the HX35 size but enlarges immediately after to 4". Goes into 5" exhaust from there back.

Even with an open intake, this combo has seen over 1,550 EGTs and over 42 psi boost. Smokes pretty heavily down low too. When the money is there, i will be looking for a bigger turbo.

If you plan on making 400 hp immediately, you should be looking for a bigger turbo. Htturbo.com is very popular as is Industrial Injection. I'm hoping that the ATS Multi-Stage will be available soon as it looks the most ingenious, but i may stick with something proven like a 62/12 to support my 500 hp goal.

The truck will be a daily driver, towing once in awhile. I built the truck to handle a heavy load. Should I even mess with this turbo? How much can this handle?

I estimate my truck to be making a good 300 hp. It needs a bigger turbo to clean up the smoke and keep the EGTs down. I know i would feel way more power if i could flow more air to burn that wasted fuel. If you are serious about 400 hp, don't fool with the HX35 unless you will build compounds. You will probably want even more power later so give yourself room to grow.

I'll add this too - 400 hp is a lot, and I mean a LOT of power. It isn't unachievable, not at all, but wow, that's more power than even I will ever need. I just got done doing the 'standard' upgrades to my rig - PDR HX-35, PDR fuel pin, injectors (PODs), 16cm collar, our own 4" Intake and exhaust, and of course cranked up the pump including the 366 '3400 rpm' spring, and I slapped down a very serious and stable 252 hp and 561 tq at the tires at 6800 ft altitude. I doubled my power. The truck woke up so much that I am pretty certain I will never need any more than that. Actually the power is a little higher now as I added the PDR fuel pin after the dyno run so I'm maybe up to 270 hp and 630 tq - that's essentially the same as the new 2008 rigs are making, and for $30,000 less.

You can get 400 hp, but the question is will you really need it? About the only upgrade I can forsee for my rig is a Snow water/meth kit, which is good for between 50-100 hp depending on the spray, but I want it for when I am towing heavy heading up the Rockies. The water/meth kits are great for cooling the exhaust and adding power very safely - a nice perk when you really need it. I won't want it for the extra power - just for the cooling so I can stay in the throttle and not melt pistons.

Ditto to M2's comments on power. It seems that after that magic 300 HP number on the old 1st gens, things start to go out a lot more quickly, Clutch on the Getrag is rated to 300, The auto will start to need mods too. Check the 1st gen stickies in the FAQs for HP upgrades, ideas , gotchas. Higher HP is definitely available, but it is going to cost you.

I just put down 257 HP, 630 TQ and it will really scoot. I think after fuel pin mods and maybe an intake, I will be done.

I recently met a guy who says he can get awesome results by modifying the stock HX35. He said it is possible it could perform almost as well as an HTT 62/12. I'm very skeptical. He said he usually gets an EGT drop of 250 degrees, gets faster spoolup, and that it might support 500hp. He also does some wastegate mods. I'm so curios that i think i'm going to try letting him work on my turbo to see what he can do. May end up saving me over $1,000 if i'm satisfied.

Did he try to sell you some ocean front property in Arizona?

I think he is blowing smoke. A 62/12 or 14 will be the best way to go. The dual wastegates will be a great thing to have. I used to run a PDR HX40. Has a single wastegate that was set at 38#. I was making 45# with it. Gating all of the cylinders will lower the drive pressure.

I'm ~400hp right now. Haven't towed with the new turbo. On the street, the EGTs are just fine. Not much more lag than the PDR 40, but I think I would maybe go with the 12 housing next time, if it won't surge on me.

He says the most power he's seen from an HX35 is about 450hp near 1500EGTS. He's thinking with my water injection i may make a hot 500hp. He doesn't think the turbo will spool much faster, just have a lot more boost at the same RPMs. I'm hoping to find out tomorrow.

My turbo has been ported and so far i'm not impressed. The truck feels less powerful. He reground my fuel plate and slid it back to the middle. Guess i should just slide it forward again to regain power. He was trying to control the smoke. Having to wait a week for him to try to tune it again.

The smoke is more gray now so it is burning the fuel better. Still seeing up to 1,500 degrees only 27psi boost. Strangely, the smoke is heavier at high RPMs. Power doesn't kick in until over 20psi. Feels best starting at a mid RPM in 2nd gear. I'll report when i experience more positive results, hopefully with dyno numbers next week.
