HX-40 Question

I just have an in general question for you big time turbo guys out there. If someone was to add an HX-40 turbo to a stock truck, what stage injectors do you think would be needed to get that turbo to be able to spool up? Would DD stage 2's work or would a person have to step up to the plate and get stage 3 injectors? If stage 2's would work, would you have to have a fueling box along with it?

Kevin, go with the stage 3's & at least a boost module & turbo bleed orfice... or a box like TST's PM3 that include both of those with the box.
Does anyone know if the new combination Edge box will include both of those?
I tried the new JVD box & was impressed.
We have all of them here {except the combination Edge, but have both of the others so you can double up] if you want to try them all out & see which one you like. See you in Febuary #ad

<font color=blue>The post above is a result of Kevin and myself debating, I just convinced him to post his question here since he wouldn't take my word for it. That is why I chose the Stage III's over Stage II's so that in winter conditions I will turn off my PE box and only be running the injectors (can't bear to leave it off for more then 3 days tho!). But I will still have the fuel to turn the HX40.

The New Edge box will be a PE and EZ all in one contained box I believe. It will have the features of a fueling box as well as the timing advantages. I'll talk to Brett about it this weekend when i see him in Denver. Both the PE and EZ have boost modules built into them.

Kevin will be better off not trying any of the boxes..... he lives in high altitude and has the stock turbo and doesn't intend to change it (not yet anyhow), so hes gotta keep his EGT's in check which is why I told him Stage II injectors + EZ box all he needs. He also like to tow as well, so I told him to shy away from the fueling boxes for now. What do you think?

Kevin. . listen to Piers. . I had the combo of stage 3's ,Blue Box(@40%) and the HX-40... Contary to many... I feel like it was minium to to run the HX-40 on a 24V... JB

My HX-40 is on its way to Majestic Turbo to have the turbo "Competition Prepped", which includes the following:

Turbo balancing is available and is done within . 005 grams
Balancing is available and is included in competition prepping
Spindle/wheel lightening is available and yields up to 600 R. P. M. drop in spool up time and up to two lbs. of extra boost at maximum turbo charge output.

SportBike really liked the performance gain after he got his back. The tech I spoke to 'Kevin' said the HX-40's really come alive after this is done.

The best thing to get a turbo started is a timing box. (EZ or VA)To really get it spining you need injectors. (DDII or DDIII)If you want to get crazy get a big fueling box.

The reason you had a problem getting the turbo going was the Blue Box. It makes great power but is a little slow on how it starts fueling. (I tried all the delay modes)

The best thing to do is have the turbo modified.

As Kat said. . him and I were just discussing this. I just can't see how it would take stage 3 injectors to get that thing spooling up. Yes I understand that it has a bigger compressor, but I don't see how a set of stage 2's wouldn't do the job. So him and I just got curious to see what everyone would say. Thanks for the answers.

No I am not thinking about an HX-40, though I am trying to find a way to lower my EGT's. I can hit 1000 degrees at 5000ft altitude. But when I start climbing up to about 8000 ft. . I know I'm gonna be in trouble. So Eric and I got to discussing turbos.

I have been getting a few emails from my last post. I,m not talking just about HX-40,s. A timing box will get any turbo spooling up faster. But the bigger the turbo the more fueling it takes to spin it efficiently. A HX-40 is real efficient in the 600-700cfm range. (thats 350-425hp)You can push it past that point but you start loosing efficience. (your generating to much heat because your spinning the turbo to fast)
The H2E is the next size up. 700-800cfm(up to 500hp)You can make more hp with it but it is just less efficient at that point. A bigger exh housing would raise the flow some but you will start loosing some low end.

The HX-35 works real nice up to 280hp,after that you need to go with a bigger exh housing to keep it efficient.

If you modify the turbo,all you are doing is improving it,s ability to spool up faster. This helps broaden the hp range of a turbo. I think a modified HX-40 would work great on a 280hp truck. My big H2E would work fine on a 350hp truck. I hope this helps clear up a few thing.

I've mentioned this before, but I think adding an ATS manifold may help broaded the HP range even further and bring the threshhold closer to an engine that is not seriously BOMBed. In theory the ATS should help improve turbo spinup though effective and even exhaust pulses/flow to the exhaust turbine. If I had the $$ to get set up that way I'd be willing to see how well it would work on an ETH with only RV injectors and boost module, if the HX40 was competition prepped.

Sport Bike... John do you have ability to do pic's ?... I'd like to see the install of the H2E as you mentioned that it took a special manifold/adapter to install... and what were the exhust connection issues

I used the stock manifold. I made an adptor out of plate steel. (If you need an adptor call Piers,he had some made up)You will need a v-band clamp and flanged starter pipe for a L-10 engine to make your 4" down pipe. You should be able to get that at any truck part store. The most important thing is to port the exh manifold. The turbine housing ports are twice the size of the exh manifold. You want to make a nice transition from the exh manifold to the turbine housing. After I made the adptor I gasket matched the exh manifold. Then I mounted the adptor and port matched it to the exh manifold and the turbine housing. Hope this helps.

Jim Leonard noticed on mine that with the HX40-16 & the mandrel bent 4" down pipe, the pipe is right against the noise batting on the firewall. I saw that but didn't think anything of it.

This can cause a fire. Jim cut it away while he was doing the new clutch. Just something to watch for. #ad
