Cold Air Intakes?

Compressor maps Ht3b and h2e

Talked to Piers today about a new turbo for my truck. I gave him a run down on my current mods and told him that I would like to stick with a single for right now. He suggested I choose between the Piers "twin ready" HX-40 or the B1-2 Bomber. . From what I understand the Bomber is a little tougher than the HX-40 and more expensive. Any suggestions from users of these turbos would be appreciated- advantages/disadvantages. .

Thanks

If your truck is setup correctly then your at 400+hp or would be with air. You need to decide now were you want the power to go, if you change to a #10 plate and some EDM's you will be past were a 40 should be, now add a 3B to a 40 for Twins and it will haul, if you want to keep a single and do the above I'd say go with the B-1, but if you want to make Twins out of it later you'll have to build or find someone to build the kit as there are no Twin Pre-built kits using the B-1 for a top turbo as it requires an external wastegate/spacer ect to make it work right... ... it's your budget. I went from a stock 35 to Twins in one step!

Thanks for the reply Jim - I was leaning toward the B-1 - BUT they have the twin setup on sale this month - decisions, decisions??

HX-40

I popped several 40's with way less mods then you have... . just a word of __________ (fill in favorite synonym for WARNING. )

Go PDR twins and just be done with it, the daily drivabilty is so much better with twins than any single big enough to do the job.

Thanks for all the replies - I think I have decided on going with a single B-1 bomber and upgrading to an ATS manifold.

Here is my reasoning please correct me if necessary on my logic:

First - the $$$ a single B-1 is obviously cheaper than twins.

Second - the durability of the B-1.

Third - I plan on O-ringing the head and getting a cam sometime in the future and this will better prepare me for twins - if I decided the single B-1 is not enough.

Fourth - with the money I save buying the B-1 I can go ahead and get some delivery valves to up my fuel a little more...

Does this make sense? - The only drawback I can see is by not getting the Twin ready HX-40, is if somtime in the future I go with twins I will be buying 2 new turbos...

The 40 will be fine as long as you keep it wastegated. My Dad made 508 rwhp with one on his '96 (fueled heavier than your truck) and 486 with one on his 24V. I had one on my '01 and made 460 with it. Also beware that an ungated B-1 will be more than enough to blow your headgasket (Dad blew his with the B-1). The wastaged 40 shouldn't be a problem. It's cheaper now, and you'll save a lot in the long run.

I have had very good luck with the PDR 40's, you will also like how it works better than a B1, much quicker spool up.

I would put my pickup in a spool-up test against an HX-40/16 any day of the week. I would bet I'm producing useable boost 100-150 RPM's sooner (not much to you fella's down low, but come join me at 475RWHP at 5000' and we'll talk).

I have the B-1-2... that is a standard exhaust housing w/ a #2 towing exhaust wheel. Used to have the quick-spool exhaust housing and it was very restrictive on the top end. I didn't lose much (some, but very little) spool w/ the bigger housing, but doubled my top end pull.

Oh, and the B1 also makes a great top turbo in a B1-B2 twin setup... ask some of the guys on here running it. I'll be in that boat some day, but have some other stuff to do first. You won't go wrong w/ the B1... and you won't pay twice for a turbo to destroy itself either, and you CAN run well over 50 PSI boost w/o any worries.

Put that sucker on, let your oil pressure go to normal operating conditions and then put it to the floor! No break-in required! :D

A B-1-2 is not a B-1 and we were talking B-1. The B-1 turbo is a very good turbo and will work just fine in a set of twins but you are going to need a little more fuel. You just need to decide what you are going to do with your truck and buy the appropriate turbo for the job.

To clarify my above decision I have decided to go with a Bomber series turbo - the jury is still out on which one - the B-1 or the B-1-2??

which is why I posted what I did... in his initial post he had listed B-1-2 which is what I'm running.

What's the difference between a regular B-1 and a B-1-2 besides the turbine wheel size?

snowracer69 - From my research the B-1-2 has less lag (spools faster than the B-1)?? Not sure - someone who knows for sure please correct me...

Jack

Well see, I do think there is a difference between a B1 Bomber and a regular B1. The B1-2 that I run just has a smaller exhaust wheel on it for faster spool here at altitude. It spools decent... not too much difference between it and the KSB-1-2 with the fueling that I have.

Oh, and the B1 also makes a great top turbo in a B1-B2 twin setup... ask some of the guys on here running it.

The only problem with this combo is no one is really making any power with it, if your not at 700+ then you need to go back to the books... welcome to 2004, this year is going to be crazy.
