OK guys I am trying to determine if the 2001. 5 with the auto transmission comes with the HX35 or HY35 turbo... . I have searched the threads but haven't been able to find a clear answere. I appears as though DC may have gone back to the HX35 for the 2001. 5 with the auto. Can anyone tell me for sure? My truck was manufactured in Sept. 2000

Thanks,

Doug S.

Doug,
Look and see if you have a hard line running to the turbo housing, or a rubber hose... this would be from the waistegate module to housing...

Rubber line = HX35
Hard line = HY35

Jet, you will 99% surely have the HY35 on the auto. That's what mine has, much to my disappointment. And where did I learn about this, The TDR... . the best $35 bucks I ever spent!! #ad

I wish someone on the TDR would step up and actually outline the swapout of the HY35 to the HX35W turbo.

It is not as easy as just unclamping the HY35 and mounting the HX35

The HY35 turbo clamp mounts and the HX35 bolts up.

There are more bits and pieces that meet the uninformed eye... .

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

Changing the HY-35 w/9cm housing turbo to the HX-35 w/12cm housing turbo is a simple swap... ... . unbolt... bolt on(new gaskets), check sig.

Changing the housing ONLY on the HY ??? I don't have any information on this option

Gary, How can it be that easy? I talked to Jeff Garmon and he said that you need to find the Bolt on casting to accept the HX35W turbo since the HY35 has the CLAMP. #ad

From what I understand the swap of the entire turbo is an easy swap, un bolt and bolt the new one on.

Swaping the housing on the HY is the difficult item, actually I was told it was impossible. In my opnion you would not want to bother swapping to an HX35, just go staight to the 40.

<font color = blue >I'm currently running with the original HY35/9cm unit and am swapping it out for the HX35/14cm at the beginning of April. I'll see if I can take a few pictures and add some words here on the TDR.

Ok I just check mine and it is the HX35W. I have a 99 4X4 34 DC. Mine was rated at 185 hp Stock. does that mean it is not stock or did DC put the HX35 in the 99's then change to the HY35. And because it is a HX35W does it still have 12. 5cm and does this boost my HP.

By the way I have a Flex hose from the oil filter and it looks like a small rubber hose to a vacum canister. All stock.

Another note there has been a TSB on Flashing TSB #18--15-00 Just had mine Flashed For the ECM and it finally made a difference. More power, smother shifts, and better fuel economy.

I had had it flashe before PCM #323730305J andit did nothing it acually made the fuel economy less.

I was getting 14. 5 max unloaded Freeway at 65 to 70 mph.

Now just returned from two 360 mile trips and chedked it both ways Pump to Pump 17. 5 mph Salt Lake to St. George Utah Round Trip. 80 mph to 85 mph.

Salt Lake To Boise Idaho Going in a blisered and high wings 15. 4 mpg @ 65 mph to Bosie Coming home 17. 9 mpg slight tail wind but mostly calm. I also ran my cruise control on all these trips. All stock and no changes except Flashing's and Auto Zone paper Air Filter and Fleet Gaurd Oil Filter From Dealer. I had them check for turbo leaks at the same time. No turbo leaks according to dealer.

Also the regulator in my right electonic window went out. Anybody else have the same proublem. When the sun was on the Right side it almost always would not work. Dealer replaced under warrant. Also all the flashing's were covered under warranty. Total Current Mileage 23065.

Now I think it is time to improve my performance by 4 inch exhaust and K&N Filter and Variable Control box. May have to go to 275's if needed I pull an 8,000 lb Jayco 26 ft. Trailer and I will be going to a 33 ft. Fithwheel. For my Retirement.

It is very simple but you must have the whole hx35w I bought mine from another TDR member and just bolted it up with new gaskets Took me about an hour. The big difference I noticed was it did not spool up quite as quick but once it was up to 30 lbs of boost it held it there even at shift changes where the hy 35 would drop from 30 down to 22 or so. Have my elbow adjusted to 30 lbs. Have not pulled enough to tell about the EGTs pulling trailers. I seem to like it better as of now though.
