Would I benifit much from getting a 16cm housing on my stock turbo? I am looking to get more top end power and get EGTs down. Yeah I know I need a bigger turbo, but I need something to get by until the end of the pulling season.

No, it will not help. I ran a 16cm on mine and if you pull anything EGT'S will go way up. I went back to stock and opened the wastegate a bit by installing a 2000 model, which has a bigger wastegate than the '94 to '98 but requires a lot of grinding in the housing to accomodate the stock fan as it(the fan), is bigger than found on a 24 valve.

I've been running mine for over 3 years now. Yes, EGT's will still get up there, depending on your fueling, but it's still better than the stock housing. The best thing to do for a limited budget, is turn it into a hybrid. That can be done for a few hundred vs 1200+ for a new turbo.

Just this last weekend I worked on a 12V that is sitting at 450 hp on #2 (or was) with a stock turbo and a 18. 5 housing..... it's been that way for a long time. The problem is he is now towing 26K and you can only imagine how that big of a housing acts. So to cure the issue I went back to a stock 12 housing setting the gate wide open at 32 psi of shop air. I then replace the studs for longer ones and put a 1/2" spacer (T3) between the manifold and housing. This allows you to vent or gate all 6 cylinders when the gate opens, you can only imagine what the boost would be with that much fuel... . 50+ but with this setup and ripping through the gears it held at 33 psi from 4th on, 3rd netted about 26-28. The proof will be this weekend when he tows once again to the races on the east coast.

Downside of this setup is in time the part of the housing that is between the vlutes (sp) will erode, not in chucks but a tiny bit over time.

I really didn't notice much difference in spoolup going to the 16, it lights maybe 100 RPM later. I actually have less smoke and better mileage with the 16 (because lower boost doesn't move the AFC arm as fast). Top end was noticeably better, although that was the good old seat of the pants meter which everyone frowns upon. I only got about a 50-100 degree reduction in EGT, but the top end pull was better thats why I like it... . and especially the MPG increase too with fuel prices these days.
