HX35 turbo mounting

Hi Everyone.

I have a HX35 turbo that I want to put on my truck and I am not sure where to find the proper size air filter to turbo and turbo to intake manifold hoses. My truck does not have a intercooler at this time and my stock hoses will not fit this turbo. I was wondering if anyone has a idea as to where I can find the proper hoses to complete the turbo install. I want to make sure that it is done properly and I know that some of you guys are running this turbo (but with the intercooler) and I am curious as to how you have mounted it. ant help would be greatly apreciated.

Here's a pic of mine. My truck is intercooled, but this may give you an indication of how it will look. There are at least a couple of guys on here who have put an HX35 on a non intercooled truck. I'm sure they'll have some good info to add.

Where did you get the air filter to turbo hose from? would one from a 2nd Gen work?

Since my truck is a '93, that is the factory intake hose. You may be able to find one in a boneyard somewhere, but I don't know how likely that is. A 2nd gen hose would probably not work because it has nearly a 180deg bend in it, making it difficult at best to connect to your airbox.

What kind of air kit are you getting? I'm running a modified Ol' Smoky rig. I just removed the air box and kept the hose clamped to the box cover, as before. Instead of using a metal strap to hold the filter to the box cover, I have it tied with some heavy nylon cord (hey, I was in the Navy, what else would I do?).



I haven't figured out what I'll do when the bad weather hits... but it hasn't yet.

I have a PDR HX35 in my early 91. I had to cut about 3/4" off the turbo end of the cross over, then get a piece of 2-1/2" (I think, maybe 2-3/4) silicone tubing; about 5" long. I worked the tubing over the outlet of the HX35 (stuff really stretches), then had to clock the turbo to the proper angle. Then I cut the original tubing in about half (still round, just not as long), slipped it over the crossover, then sprayed some PB Blaster on it. Slip the bigger tubing from the turbo over the smaller tubing (and thus onto the crossover), and get stuff turned correctly and reinstall. I'll post a pic if Mom can find the camera. It is not an exact fit (intake bolts are 1/4" off), but I gained 3 psi peak boost, and lowered EGTs about 150 at WOT, so I imagine there are no leaks. You wont notice a HUGE difference w/ a stock housing, but it will be a little quicker off the line, and you will lower cruise EGTs about 75-100*, and it will climb slower then with the H1C. If you have any other questions, PM me. I had to rig up a piece of plastic over the end of the intake hose to make that work, but have ordered a new one from the online Dodge place that sells stuff for 30% off retail.

Dpuckett, It would be great if you could post any pic you have of your setup. I was thinking of doing just about the same thing but I don't know where I can find the silicone tubing, can I find it at a home improvement store or is it something I can find at a Cummins dealer?



I am really excited about installing the turbo on my truck as it came with a ported 18cm exhaust housing. I was considering going to a 16cm but I drive alot on the highway and do not want to hurt my top end ( no overdrive ) so I think that I will stick with the ported 18. The ports that mount to the manifold are HUGE compared to the stocker and the silencer ring has been removed from the turbo. I have seen as high as 32 PSI of boost with the stock turbo and I am hoping to gain a few more with the HX35 as well as a slight drop in EGT's

Cummins would be a good place to start. Some performance or speed shops (think ricers) might be able to point you in the right direction. THe stuff aint cheap- seems like I paid $4- something an inch. Dont look for a lot of extra peak boost- you might not get it, esp if it is a stock HX35. You will however, see slower rises in EGTs, and a slight reduction across the board. Peak EGT should drop a little, but that depends on fuelling and air flow in/ out. I think you should be ok with a 16, but if you like the ported 18, stay with it.

FWIW,,, guys, if you are going to do your own porting on things like turbo housings... use a bit of care.

What can happen is the porting, if "aggressive" enough will also alter/reduce exhaust gas velocity. You don't want to do that. All you want to do is ease up the restriction to exhaust gas entry to the housing.

Just a thought...



Also, a "ported" 18. 5cm housing will be a good housing at highway speeds, especially at the upper ends... . it will be kinda doggy around town or on rural roads were you don't hit 70+MPH...

A ported 16cm is a great choice for all around, including towing and light to light performance.

The exhaust housing that is going to be mounted on my truck has been opened up a little where it meets the manifold and smoothed out a bit on the inside. It looks as though it will flow preety good. I hope it helps on the top end as I do about 90% of my driving arount 70 to 75mph and that is getting pretty close to the upper limits of my truck. One day I am going to look into a gearvendor o. d. as with the 3 spped I have to keep it to the floor to avoid getting run over on the interstate. I do not want to push it that hard all of the time, even if it can handle it.

If you are looking for a complete factory system I'd be happy to give you the whole original system off of my rig - you take care of shipping and I'll box it up for you (though I don't think you'd want the filter... ). Not sure if a 2ng gen system would work. Of course, I know this guy that makes something a little newer, but you'd have to drop me a PM about that... ... .

I'm not sure what the pickins is like in the bone yards for CTD stuff - just haven't looked.
