What would be the advantages of installing a HX40 on a stock truck? I will sometime in the future add the 2nd or 3rd step cam plate and would the HX40 make any difference??

Thanks
Rick

I tried that out and it won't work without a boost module. The truck defuels as soon as the boost reaches 22psi or so. I actually got the boost up to 24 before the check engine light came on. The egt's were 1050 degrees with the throtle buried on a 6% grade at 7200' elevation. That is a big difference between the hx35 that ran 1300 at the same spot but it was defueling pretty bad and was going about 5mph slower. It is also a little slower below 2000 rpm because the ecm wont add fuel until it sees more boost. While the hx35 12cm is king of low end boost it's like having a plugged exhaust at high rpm's. The hx40 really uncorks it on the top end. The tradeoff will be a little slower acceleration in town with better performance lower temps above 2000 rpm on the highway. Adding a little more fuel on the bottom end should help alot with the lag. With the EZ box on there is hardly any difference in lag above 1500 rpm. Nice combo.

OO Your response seems reasonable if it was a 24 valve but his signature shows that it is a 12 valve.
I was curious what the affects would be of a hx-40 on a stock truck. Although I don't have a stock truck.
I would imagine that the part about the affects on power relative to rpm would be the same though, 24v vs. 12v.

What size exhaust housing is on the 97's. I think my moms early '91 has a 18cm housing on it and runs around town just fine. Going to a 16cm hx40 should reduce lag compared to the bigger housing,at least in theory. If the '97 comes with the 12cm housing then there should be a slight loss in spoolup going to a 16cm. Hope that makes sense #ad

The truck is running the stock turbo(HX35 12cm I think is the numbers). I was just wonder if it would move more air, but if its going to loose the low end I would not want to do it. I use the truck for towing our rv at rpms from 1800-2400. Once that big turbo spooled up I bet it would run, but it would be on the top end instead of the bottom end. .
And yes it is a 12V... ... .

RHarvey,

Based on my experience, I'd have to say, you bet'cha. This is assuming you're talking about the 16 version. My reason is that it increased my hwy mileage over 2mpg, consistantly. #ad
My in town driving is a mix of hwy & in town & it's up . 5mpg. This is with easy driving, i. e. I'm not on the plate.

Spool up comes a little later than with the stock Monica, but it doesn't hurt low end. If it does, I sure can't feel it. When you put your foot in it, even slightly, boost comes on so much faster you can't believe it. That needle really moves fast. I can't say how stock fuel levels relate, but if you're planning on throwing more fuel at it, it'll just smile & make the boost needle go screaming upwards. #ad
I wouldn't have believed it.

Smoke is tons less now too. You know that black crud that accumulates on the edges of that chrome kit? Gone. #ad

Two downsies. 1. It's turned my clutch into a long term dyno mule BD torque convertor @ full throttle. #ad
I knew I was slipping before, but at least I was still hooking up. 2. The filter minder moves now. This baby sucks more air than before, hugely. Now you have to clean or replace that air cleaner sooner. Or just whip in the RE-0880.

There are some easy ways to up the fuel enough at the bottom end to make up any difference in turbo lag. Maybe something similar to tweaking the star wheel.
