Don't even think twice about doing it. Do your HX40 a favor & plug one of these babys on it. You won't believe the difference. I didn't & just got done putting the stock box back on to verify.

Spool up is bunches better. Turbo lag ... what turbo lag. :) It use to have a noticeable lag, but I didn't care. The benefit was worth the HX40. But now, it's as good or better than what I remember about the HX35! Boost is higher now at steady speeds & the slightest throttle change instantly increases boost. Previously, you waited for the boost to catch up while you smoked. Not any more. :D

Just to make sure I was starting from a good baseline, I cleaned the K&N, so it is not like I was starting with a 'plugged' filter. EGT is 50 degrees cooler running 70mph with the cruise control. I haven't run the mileage check yet, but that's coming. It seems that I have to barely keep the throttle open to run 70 now, so I'd guess mileage will be up.

The stock airbox is clearly restricting the HX40. Your HX40 will be happy, but your rear tires won't. :D :D

Forrest, for those of us (like me) that haven't been keeping up on TDR lately, does MoparGuy filter = AFE filter, aka "Big Honkin' Air Filter"?

Big Bob runs an HX40 but complains of slow spoolup and is thinking of trading out to a Piers HX35. I think Bob has the K&N RE-0880 but maybe the AFE filter would help him out. He doesn't get spoolup on his BOMBed '99 until 1700rpm or so.

Vaughn

Good hearing from you again Vaughn :) Yep, that's the one. I also ran the RE-0880 with the prefilter, but it was too noisy for me. Couldn't hear that new radio the wife got me. :) I'm getting faster spool up at a lot lower RPM than 1700.

It's so hard to compare apples to apples being we're all configured differently. The amount of fuel at lower rpm, timing, exhaust restriction ... must drive the aftermarket folks nuts. My star wheel is set for a lot of fuel at lower rpm. I wanted that for towing startup. It's the stock AFC spring if that gives you & Big Bob any more info as to setup.

It's clear that the stock air filter housing with the K&N is way restrictive for the HX40. Big Bob should go for it & spend the bucks & try it with his config to see how it works. Heck, just the 'opening the hood' value is worth the money. :D :D

Mileage run results

I just re-ran the 63. 5 mile, all highway, mileage run. The outside temp was 1 degree cooler than last time & the wind was approx the same. The 1st run, w/o the Moparguy filter, used 2. 805 gallons, resulting in 22. 6 mpg. Todays run used 2. 39 gallons, resulting in 26. 5 mpg. I sure didn't expect that!

EGT was consistently 50 degrees cooler on this run. There were 3 'hill' landmarks I used on the 1st run. The 1st run markers were 750, 800 & 800 degrees. These are hills spaced more than 5 miles apart. Todays run resulted in 700, 750 & 750 degrees.

Moparguy, you be the man. :D

Big filter

Jeremy, call your local cummins dealer the part number is AH19037 it is a marine version, cost was 33. 46 plus tax. Took the stock box off and placed some automotive type rubber stops that I got from the hardware store over two of the three bolts and let the filter ride on them as it has a mesh covering, and everyone including you will say dang that's a big filter.

Jim

P. S. It flows 915CFM:D

turbo whine question ....

how much louder is the whine wit hthe moparguy filter ??? when i had the 40 on with my RE-0880 is was VERY loud , to loud if you ask me , how bad is it with the BHAF ????

cunninsgetme,

I also had the 0880 with the pre filter. Had to take it out, way too loud for me.

I had the stock air box, w/o the snorkle & with a K&N element. You could hear the turbo whine, but not objectionable to me. There is less turbo whine with the BHAF. :D
