ATS Manifold Assembly problems

$6.00 Inline Trans temp gauge fitting at local hardware.

DRAG DIESEL, I just drilled a 1/2" hole between both sides and now the boost stops where the waste gate is set. This is a Mod that Nathan(Idaho CTD) told me about that he is using on his HX-40 that is his small turbo in his twin set up. It seem to work like a champ, I wish I would have drilled it some time ago...

As I said before my PDR HX-40 is a super turbo, with it and the set up I have in the truck right now is the best towing set up I have had to date. With my light gross weight(16800 lbs) I can tow up any hill at 70 MPH with out pushing my EGTs past 1200 deg.

The only way I think you could ahve a better turbo set up for towing would probibly be a twin set up. .

Now there's my kind of mod. And what the TDR is about! Keep it up boys! Oo.

Dunno... . can't keep a turbo in her to save my life right now... it's probly just a shade over 160hp at least that's what it says on the side of the timing cover.

I just want to throw a word of caution out there for everyone who just read the post about drilling a hole in the divider wall of the turbo to balance drive pressure.

I did this about a year ago and it worked for a while, but after several months of temperature cycles, cracks actually started forming near the hole that I drilled. I caught it early, but reinstalled the turbine housing later in a pinch.

A piece of the divider wall actually broke out (from the cracks) and went into the turbine wheel. Not good!

My digital camera is out on loan right now or I'd snap some pictures and show you what actually broke out.

Be careful. If you guys are going to do this, I'd would strongly recommend that you remove the turbo and check for crack growth every month or two.

Drag Diesel, what are you talking about "160hp on the cover". And "not being able to keep a turbo in".

160hp on the timing cover was a joke dude. AKA: laugh... ha ha... funny?

Not being able to keep a turbo in... . what part of this don't you understand... . THEY KEEP BLOWING UP!!! I need a turbo in the K-31 format or LARGER. Ask Joe D if he would put a 40 on, go on the dyno, and drop the hammer... . I don't think so.

I thought the question (from keith) Was "How much more do you have than that?"

I didn't answer this question because I don't know... . like most I am not going to BS my through an answer just to make it sound good.

I believe your position was that the HX-40 from PDR was "JUNK"???????????????????????????

You put words in my mouth again.

It sounds to me like you don't really know. And the mods that you have made to it, have made it JUNK.

See attached photo... I guess it takes junk to holeshot the Red Rocket.

And the proof is how you answered the last question.

The proof is at the race track…. see you there.

If I am not mistaken, I saw you run about 450 on the dyno up at BD last April... It was an awfully smokey 450 as well.

This thread seems to be getting a little warm!!:D

Jake, keep up the good work buddy!! I can't wait until

you get those twins on your truck!! You and I BOTH

know you have enough fuel!!:D

To all who are reading this...

When confronted "overfueled" has deleted his post slaming me... . hmm I wonder why that was.

Evan: correct you are my friend... . the first pull was 380hp... put 5 guys in the back... brought it up to 450. 8hp... tires were still slipping, and that is not an excuse for not making big numbers, but the point was I made more than everyone there on that given day.

90,000 of my 118, 000 miles have been with an Hx40, the first one was a Majestic tweaked model that made it 3 miles down the road and came apart at less than 20 psi.

The one that went on the next day was a stock Hx40, a spare that Mark Chapple had on hand. It lasted until I removed & sold it, to install a faster-spooling Hx40 from Piers. That one has been run at 500 HP fueling levels on my 24 valve for 52,000 trouble-free miles.

I've seen high HP 12 valve engines pop quite a few turbos, some due to over-speeding or abuse. At least more often than I've seen it happen on the 24 valve engines.

Would I buy one again ? Yes, if it was from Piers. I know what mods he puts into them, it's why I traded up from stock.

My first HX40 I got from Piers. Sent it to Majestic for a balance and lightening. Got 20 miles out of it. First time I put my foot into it, it spun the bearings. 15-20 Lbs of boost just like Briar. TDR member WierCummin (thanks again :) ) was my spokesman @ Majestic. They didn't have any more HX40's to replace mine but I got refunded the cost of the balancing. Then WierCummin hooked my up w/ Sportbike. They both knew I had gotten screwed so Sportbike sold me another '40 @ cost (thanks again too :) ) . Ran the stock '40 for about a year. Sent it to Piers to have it re-worked to PDR specs. It been about 3 years. No problems at all. I don't drive it real hard.

I had a PDR HX 40 installed about a month ago. I have not talked to anyone about my experiences yet, but I can not say I am good in the egt department. Towing a load of about 6,000 lbs last week I could not pull an 8% grade any faster than 55mph. I was off the throttle or so lightly into it, like less than an 1/8 throttle and I was hovering between 12-1300 degrees the whole hill. I pulled a few more hills and they were all the same. Could not use hardly any of my power. Not sure if it was the K&N airfilter in the stock airbox that was one of the big culprits. I now have a BHAF installed but pinning my pyro is still pretty darn easy. I think I need some pump work... ... LOL What could be my problem? Most info should be in my sig.

I have a Scotty 2 air system on mine, but at a grose weight of 16,800 lbs. there isn't a hill I can't pull at 70 MPH in 4th. I haven't had the stock housing on for a very long time. I was still running a #12 plate and stock injectors back then:rolleyes: Coool air is the way to go... .

Those HX-40 temps are not right IMHO, I can pull the hills of tennessee at 16,500 weighed with no problems. I only have at PDR 35 and on those hills I start at the bottom at 55 and top at 75 to 80 with temps staying pre-turbo at 1200 or so. That pulling 30 to 40 PSI on the turbo.

So is it a cool air problem? I don't think I am to wild on the fuel side. One thing I never mentioned is I tried in both OD and 3rd and still around the same speed egt.

I'm sure a better intake would help, but what were the elevations?

Donkey, what were your boost readings? Was it smoking ? (a steady stream of smoke right up until around 55mph?) Sometimes you can have a boost leak and not even hear it, have you checked the boots?

The BHAF just doesn't flow enough air past 350HP(if you're working the engine, otherwise you won't notice it), the stock airbox is downright worse.

The Scotty II , a K & N Re-0880 cone filter, or an AFE are all high-flowing enough at your fuel levels...

Elevation is around 13-1500 ft above sea level. I will check the clamps, it has been quite awhile since I did it. I can hit about 38 psi boost. When I was towing boost never really got into the 30's I was that light on the throttle to keep my egt's below 1300. Smoke... ... . like a freight train. Just got back from a trip to town and I floored it in 3rd and let it shift into OD and there was a steady stream of rich black smoke bellowing out. Hmmm boost leak, sometimes the most obvious things are overlooked.
