Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) A Blessed Merry Christmas to all!

I picked up an HX40w - brand new, good price.
Now I need to figure out what I want to do with it - or better question, what CAN I do with it?

Also, It IS time to replace the stock exhaust - and I'm shopping for a good deal on a 4" turbo-back system.

Is the HX40 "too big" for my 1999 auto truck (RV275's, Smarty, Pulse Adrenalin, ATS transmission)?

Can I make a hybrid with the stock HY35?

Can I use both and make a compound twins setup?

Or... If none of that is practical I guess I could just sell it to someone who has a use for a bigger turbo.

First your 99 has a HX35/12 stock. Hy's were 2001 and 02's with auto.

It depends on what you do with the truck. The 40 is too big to tow with, IMO. However you can do a hybrid with it I think. Talk to Piers.

You don't have enough fuel for twins. And you would do well with the stock turbo for the top of twins. The 40 is not big enough for the bottom and ussually too big for the top with twins.

I got my best mileage using a 40, BTW.

I stand corrected. My truck *does* have an HX35w. I found and read the tag on the turbo today.

The idea of a hybrid is looking more and more appealing.

But is it practical for a do-it-yourselfer (me), or does it require special tools, skills and machining? Is there a cook-book or "Hybrid Turbos for Dummies" out there somewhere?

As much as I like the idea of a hybrid, I hate to waste half of a brand new turbo. :(

I have the PDR hx-40 and it works great with my set up. It tows OK with 3500-5500 loads. I'm probably a little under turbo'd.

BTW - My new trailer is a 27' enclosed combination Car/ATV/snowmobile trailer. I *plan* to move back to Colorado as soon as I can (currently living in Memphis).

I expect to make a lot of trips at high altitudes (8,000' - 12,000') to get to my favorite ATVing destinations).

I really want to get my EGT's under control.

275 injectors and a Smarty should not be hard to control EGT's.

I'd suggest you remove the turbo, drill out the wastegate port to 7/8. I think stock it is 3/4. And a boost elbow so it can run up to 30-35 psi.

That HX40 is going to really make smoke getting it spooled up!!!

If it wasn't for the altitude, I'd say try a 14w housing.

I agree with what Fox says 100%. One thing I don't notice in your truck details is any work on the exhaust system. I replaced my stock muffler with a piece of straight pipe, and it did wonders for my EGT. Very simple and cheap to do, and I don't mind the increased exhaust noise. If the noise will be an issue for you, you can just replace the stock muffler with a straight through design, or better yet go with a 4" system. That'll be cheaper than a new turbo.

I've been waiting for a long time for my exhaust to develope one little rust hole so I would have an excuse to upgrade to a 4" turbo-back system.

Shortly before I left home for this trip (I'm in Colorado Springs now), the muffler outlet rusted off and left the tailpipe dangling by the rubber strap. I temporarly welded it back together for the trip - hoping to find a good deal and/save on shipping costs. Then at the SEMA show in Vegas, I picked up this turbo. Now I need to figure out what I'm doing before I buy a new exhaust, because I may need a different down-pipe.

I already have a boost elbow (see full truck details in the link in my siganture). I have seen a max of 33 or 36 PSI (I don't remember for sure). My turbo - even the "cold side" and the pipe to the first boost tube are discolored from the heat. :(

I keep the Smarty on 2 to save my speedometer correction without adding timing. I control smoke & power with the Adrenalin.

>>cheaper than a new turbo...
I already have the turbo. but if it isn't practical I'll just sell it and use the $$ towards the new exhaust and fuel for the trip home.

Who has the best deal on a 4" exhaust now?
Denver is close; and I can pick my route back to Memphis after Thanksgiving. I don't mind a detour for a change of scenery and to save $$ on parts & shipping.

Thanks.
I bookmarked that site.

I figure I'll buy a new exhaust after I decide what I'm doing with the turbo. Too bad the downpipe isn't consistant from one turbo to the next.

Bump!

What is the difference between 6-blad or 8-blade?
Where do you measure "16cm" or whatever?

I'm still not sure what I've got here, or how I can use it.

Is machine work required to create a hybrid, or can I just bolt the parts together?

8 blades are 56mm inducer

7 blades are 58mm

6 blades are 60mm

ex. housing should have a # stamped inside the ex. inlet and/or on the housing itself. ;)

My experience: 8 blade is very slow spool. I had several people who tried it and nobody liked it. 6 blade is faster and better flow. You decide and mebbe it'll work for you. Let us know.

8 blades are also often coupled to 18-19cm housings. :{

What I tried was a hybrid with a 12 housing. We removed the 8 blade and then it spooled nice. Maybe something else was goin on? That's just been my experience.
