I did the HY to HX swap and wasn't impressed! Actually I couldn't see any difference in egt's. At that time I had an EZ + DD2's, then added a PE-Comp.

Personally depending on your needs/expectations I would either go with one of Piers HX-35 or if you are going to be adding a lot of fuel I would consider Piers HX-40, Kurts B-1 or his new AT-4.

Don't do it. I just did it the other day, and the HY is faster spooling IMO. Just leave that HY unless your going to high hp numbers.

Andrew

Yet HY will spool faster with the smaller housing. If you are going to do the conversion as seems a must once you go for injectors I am with jetpilot go for the PDR HX-35. They are really not that expensive and will give you more performance than a regular HX

I may be going the other way... . I may install a HY35 on my truck with an external high flow wastgate. . if I can fine a cheap one. . stay tuned!

Those of you that have had both the HX35, and HY35 apart, are there any differences in the compressors and turbines? If so what are they?

I took my HY apart last week on my ironing board(serves also as the eating table in my dorm room) and found no real difference in the 2 except the exhaust housing, and the compressor housing. We know that the HY has a smaller exhaust, but I feel the compressor side is smaller as well. The blades(turbines) are the same size I believe also.

The spool is so quick on the HY it is unreal. I would think a wastegate set for about 30psi, going to a xxxx turbo would be nice for a daily driver not trying to go over 450-500 hp.

If you have anymore questions, I can try and answer them.

Just took my "new" HY apart :)

The port in the exhaust housing where the exhaust gases enter the turbine is over 3/8" wide for the whole circumfrence! The turbine is very small, and has a very aggressive slope to the blades. The wastgate port is only 1" in diameter it is going need some help. I will compare it to my stock HX tomorrow when I put the HY on.

from what I can see these two turbos are identical with regards to the rotating assemblies.

The HX compressor housing is noticeably larger.

I did find out one interesting bit of info... my ETH came stock with a 14cm housing:D

I like the HY35 turbo, however in stock configuration I do not love it (yet).

This thing spools much faster than my stock HX35/14. It cut my smoke output in half. This turbo would be a good quick fix for BOMBed rigs that have to pass an opacity test.

The compressor housing is smaller, it does not push enough air to keep things cool. The pressure ratio of this thing sucks... ... that is why you see so many HY compressor housings where the clear coat has carmalized. The HY does not run hot because of the small turbine housing (cross sectional area of the turbine inlet is very close to that of my 14cm) it runs hot beause the compressor and housing are too small, and can not supply enough air to keep things cool. When you do get boost up to 30 PSI and over the housing gers scorching hot... no where near as hot as a HX35.

IMO in stock form this turbo is good for engines with no more than 270-280 RWHP, an it is not effecient at all over 25 PSI of boost.

However I intend to change that.

I have thought the same thing about the HY. Please share you plans for BOMBing the turbo. I think that it would make a perfect project for twins in to a huge second turbo.

Andrew

I am done for the day. put the HX back on and now I am eating dinner..... a nice big BB-Q'd rib steak:D

As for BOMBing the HY, I just wish it shared more parts with the HX... that would make things much easier

ha ha ha. Just cleaned it because I like you looked for the obvious first.

Thanks anyways

what is that part for? email me!
