I think my turbo is dying. It is a Hx35 off of an H. O. 24V with about 220K on it. I got it used from a friend and it was a great improvment over from my stock HY30. It has started to squeal at different times often when its cold, hot, warm, etc. Should I replace it temporarily with the HY30 and send the other out for rebuild or buy a new one like a PDR or City Diesel? Also what does a wastegate do? I know I have one on the HX35 but do I want one on a new turbo? Who can I send the turbo to for a rebuild? Well thats all I can think of now.

Check for a boost leak, they will make a squeal sound at times. This usually occurs at the higher boost levels. Can you hear anything at idle?

a wast gate opens when you boost pressure reaches what ever peak pessure it is set for so that the turbo doesnt spin into orbit kinda like a govenor. all it does is redirect your exaust out the pipe instead of through the turbine. i would recomend having one if you want more boost you can ajust the wast gate

Pull the cover and see if it moves in and out. It can move up and down some, but in and out is bad. See also if it spins freely and if the blades are chewed up.

I'm kind of in the same boat as kevinsmith. I have my stock HX-35, w/ a boost elbow set at 34PSI. It has 230k on it and I'm wondering if it's just time to get another turbo before this one blows up and sends pieces into my motor. The fins aren't chewed up at all, but if I pull off the intake piping and grab the shaft it will move a little bit up and down. I was thinking about having mine rebuilt, but I was thinking maybe I should get a turbo that will flow more air without pushing it to it's limits. I was looking at a B1 or a dodgezilla(Hx35/40 hybrid?) turbo, any suggestions?
