Has anyone ever had to replace or rebuild a Hydro Boost assembly because it was allowing air to seep into the power steering system? I've been battling power steering problems for months. I just degreased the Hydro Boost assembly to see if there is any seepage any where. All it takes is a tiny leak to suck air into the power steering system and cause problems.
Firestone ruined my first two AGR power steering pumps. I'm on my third pump that a different shop installed that is working fine. My first AGR power steering box I had installed had to be replaced as well. When my first pump went out I had to really man handle the steering wheel to turn the truck and I think the excess force wrenched the internal parts of the box too much and caused it to start leaking and getting sloppy.
I've got a good pump and gear box finally but there is still air entering the system some where. There are no leaks on the pump or gear box but air is coming from some where. The Hydro Boost was covered in a thin layer of grease but there were no visible leaks. I've degreased the Hydro Boost assembly and now I'm going to watch for any signs of seepage. I wanted to hear from anyone that has had Hydro Boost issues that effected the power steering.
Also, I have found out that for an extra $150 AGR will sell you a complete power steering pump with a reservoir and drive gear. Getting the gear off the pump and reinstalling it on the new pump has been a challenge several shops struggled with. My drive gear was worn out at 150K miles and needed to be replaced anyway.
