The other day I discovered what appeared to be an oil stain on the floor mat, just to the right of the brake pedal. A peek under the dash showed oil dripping from from the rod between the brake pedal and the brake booster. As I can't handle this type of repair myself at present, I took the truck to the guys that have been doing the major repair on my other vehicles over the years and got some bad news. They tell me the brake booster is a non repairable item and only available from a dealer and is very expensive. For them to do the replacement, it's going to cost me 700 bux! I called a dealer for a quote on doing the replacement and was told the couldn't give me an estimate without seeing the vehicle! At that point I was in no mood to drive 25 miles round trip because they wouldn't take my word on the nature of the problem.

Replacing the booster doesn't appear to be a difficult task. Is my regular mechanics giving me the straight scoop on the cost of the booster and it's being available only from a Dodge dealer?

The hydroboost units on our trucks look just like the ones GM used in the '86 GMC Jimmy I used to have. I had to replace one on that vehicle. If I remember right I paid $150 or so for it. I bought it from a company called Page Brake in Salt Lake City. Hope this helps. The install was awkward, but doable.

Had a problem with the one on my '95 Suburban, replacement was quoted by the dealer at $1,100. Looked all over till someone told me about directpart.com. I emailed them and they had a rebuilt one for a little under $300, Don't know if they have them for our trucks but I thought I'd let you know. Changing the Hydroboost was only moderately difficult and my mechanic skills are definately average. Good Luck:D

Riflesmith & dwela ,

Thanks for the responses. I began an internet search today and have sent a couple of emails to parts houses. I am waiting for the replies. I'm going to do a phone search locally for a used unit for a price comparison although I'm not to keen on going that route at this point.

I called a second dealer this morning and received a quote of $800 to replace the booster, if nothing else is required. A big incentive to change it myself if I can locate a replacement at a lesser price.

dfirlik,

If you'd been looking for motorcycle parts directparts.com would have been appropriate however since you're not,... Sorry for the mixup but the site is directpart.com not directparts.com. Another senior moment I guess. I wish you well in your quest.

Hi Dan,

When I got the motorcycle page I figured there was possibily a one character discrepancy and I managed to find the correct siite by eliminating the "s" on a hunch. "All's well that ends well". I have received a quote of $421 (new) from one of the searches and I am waiting to hear from the others.
