2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Hydro booster touchy at lo speed

I have a 1999 short bed 2500 and the brakes are real touchy at low speeds up to about 8 mph. It will throw everything forward and nearly lock the brakes, with the slightest pressure. Has anyone adjusted the Hydro Booster or had this problem. Is there a kit for the booster? I do not want to exchange it for a poorly rebuilt one. The pads are in good shape with no oil or anything else on them.

I had this problem... it made me mad after about a week, so I just stomped the living daylights out of the brake pedal (sitting in park) and whatever was causing the issue never returned in 130k... it almost acted like a valve or something had hung up...



Another thing to check is the proportioning valve on the rear axle... if the lever falls off (common), it will cause the rear brakes to apply "full on" when the brakes are applied and make them real grabby.



Also check for a leaking wheel seal in the back...

Thanks for your reply. I have no leaking wheel seal or leaking brake fluid and i changed the brake fluid,, it was black. Where is the leaver that falls off? I have never had a problem like this and the book that I have does not cover a problem like this.

Any help would be appreciated

On the back axle... driver's side IIRC... there will be a proportioning valve on the brake lines with a lever from the axle to the frame (this adjusts the brakes automatically based on load)...

I do not know what your real problem is, but if it turns out to be your hydroboost unit I know where you can get a new one that is reliable.



I replaced mine (as others on this site have) from Paul Clark at www.hydroboost.com. Paul is real knowledgable on this subject and may be able to help. It's been about 2 years ago when I replaced mine but I think the price was $275 but it is not rebuilt but a NEW unit. The only problem is they need your old unit so they can re-use the mounting bracket a few other parts. You can't remove them yourself so you must send yours in and they will turn-around it in about 1 day.



Mine was leaking and I've had no problem with it since. Some rebuilds can be bad so it wasn't worth it for me to take a chance on a bad rebuid. You won't find the correct part for your truck on their site. They list one for Dodge to replace a vacuumn boost unit. That is not what you want of course. You must email or call to get the correct one. Go to their site. There is good info on how hydroboost works and give Paul a call or email. I don't believe you can rebuild the hydrboost yourself.
