Just wanted to share my experience with the Hypertech programmer. I recently used this for my first real power upgrade. I don't notice a lot of difference on level ground but on the grades it made a world of diff. My EGTs and boost ( no wastegate yet) are just the same as stock. The price was great ( around 330. 00) and it lets you calibrate your speedo to different size tires as well as getting DTC's and clearing them. It took all of 2 minutes to do and was very easy. Not the kick of an Easy but may be good for those towing that want a mild upgrade.

Thanks for the post, I was recently considering a Hypertech programmer but was not sure if it would make a noticeable difference. You say it makes a difference going up hills, pardon the question, but what do you notice? Thanks again.

On grades that I used to shift down on, I can now accelerate up without downshifting. It seems the extra torque comes on strong around 1600. The article showed a gain of around 30 hp and 120 torque to the rear wheels. Time permitting I plan to disable the wastegate and put on a boost fooler and see if it is any better. It does feel stronger on level ground it is just that it is more noticeable on a grade.

boost foolerr?!?!?!

Now this has sparked my imagination, and in going a long with the superchip topic, I have an 01 with a superchip and a stock auto with afe and gauges. I pull a 41 ft. flatbed from NW Iowa to SE Arkansas with different farm equipment, my biggest load weighing in at about 30 thousand gross with the truck and trailer. Yes i know, buy a semi, but they are regulated by the dot way too closely. Anyway, the superchip is a great buy, but when pulling large grades my egt's will hit the 1400 mark pre turbo. How hot is too hot anyways, everyone says something different, but im sure you guys will know for sure. So with my high egts i wanted to get 4 inch first, but couldn't get the cash for it right away. In searching the net, i found a product from bullydog to raise boost on 01 and 02 auto's, and bought it for like 40 bucks. Well i get the product, nothing more then a nother spring and a peice of aluminum and an adjustable turnbuckle if you will. So i put it on and tightened it up a bunch, but in doing so, my boost would hit 26 pounds real quick, but then it would cut fuel way back and your acc. goes to crap. I was assuming the only way to fool the computer was with an edge ez or comp. , but couldn't find the cash for that at this point either. (Being in college really sucks the cash account for toys. ) So any info on this so called boost fooler would be excellent to know!!!! Thanx,

Kevin

What you have is not a boost fooler.

It is a TST J-hook. I have one too. All it does is delay the wastegate from opening at 20 psi to about 28psi. Just what you wanted. I got mine from TST for $24 for all others reading this for futer ref.

You now have an overboost condition, and you need a Boost fooler. or EZ or Van AAken are reputed to be able to supress the overboost signal if my memory serves. Dunno about the Hyperchips doing this.

The SuperChips does not have this ability. I went with the superchips because being able to recalibrate my speedometer for tire size was more important to me.

1400 degrees pre-turbo is extremely high. especially if maintained for any length of time. So your approach to cram in more air is right. But you need some kind of boost fooler.

I would not run these trucks at 1200 degrees for any length of time. Pre turbo. I read in some magazine recently comparing different diesels, that it is not recommended beyond 1150 pre turbo. Lot's of folks will have other opinions on that. don't know where the mag got it's info.

Get a boost fooler, and put a 4" straight through muffler on it. Behind the resonator, the exhaust piping increases to 4" diameter. With your J-hook, I bet you get below 1200 easily. May have to drop superchips back to mid-level tuning. You didn't say which setting you were at.

hey,

wondering if anyone has any mpg #'s for the hypertech... also, is there noticeably more punch from the truck? does it get out of the hole any quicker? i am fairly new to the dodge cummins world and am looking for a good mild upgrade for my 2000

My MPG dropped approximately 1. 2 around town but there was quite a rise in performance. City and Highway MPG dropped to 16. 2/18. 7 respectively. I use Hypertech III on my 1999 4X4 with a 3. 55 Rear End on level 3. I tow a 4,000 lbs boat and have 285 X 75 X 16 Tires. I hated the stock 245 tires it came with, so I used Hypertech III to adjust my speedometer (capable up to 44 inch tires). Hypertech suited my needs for a mild upgrade.
