The Fuel Pump Shuffle...

Transmission Cooler?

I recently heard that Hypertech had just released a re-programmer device for the Dodge Ram 24 valve. On the surface it sounds like a pretty good deal, 3 different settings, built in diagnostic code retriever, the ability to re-calibrate your speedo for different size tires, the ability to take advantage of a lower degree thermostat, you can re-load your stock program at any time, and all emmissions legal and DOT approved (pending). And it's available for just over $300.

Supposedly you don't have to have gauges either, according to thier web site, during thier research they made sure that EGT's never got in the danger zone.

I was wondering if anybody had used this product yet, and also what happened with fuel economy as well?

I know SuperChips makes a similiar product, but after doing some research I think I am more interested in the Hypertech.

Thanks

I bet the Hypertech is really similar to the SuperChip setup. If it is I think you'd get more bang for your buck from a timing box like an EZ.

I have one, and have yet to get it to adjust for tire size without it throwing my truck into some kind of limp mode. I did get it to load power level three one time and it seemed to run great, so I decided to adjust tire size again and it went back to limp mode or something. I plan to call hypertech tomorrow to find out what is happening.

My honest opinion says I can't see anyone getting one. There have been posts on not only this site about ecm's needing complete flashovers because of them corrupting OEM programing. Or they have not added any power , or have caused drivability issues, and not been able to correct tire size difference without having shift issues. As for Code reading, for you that is a plus as post 2k you could simply cycle the key but 98. 5 til then ya can't. Do they have a money back kinda thang at all? You just may get lucky with it ... but if ya don't? *Sigh* Man I wish it was as easy like my Hypertech I used in my 2 door z-71. THAT worked and like a dream too. Good gains , great shifting. It seems that our aplication is just that much harder to have a succsess rate with because of variences between trucks?

Well, the tech at hypertech didn't seem to be too concerned! Told me to try reprogramming it to stock again with a different proceedure this time. I can't see it working any differnet, but will try it when I get home and see what happens. Something tells me I may have to go to the dealer and get the ECM reflashed at my costs! grrrrrr.

Turbodog,

Reflash the ecm by pulling the fuses (follow hypertech's instructions), and make sure your cable is connected consistently to the OBD connector. I had quite a bit of trouble with mine and that was a problem. Also, don't stack the hypertech with any electronic boxes, they don't add anymore power, and mess up the programming. If the programmer asks you if it was re-programmed by the dealer, say yes, and it will fix the computer, that happened on a test truck I used a couple months ago when I was doing the comparison article. As far as the programmer itself, I don't know how anyone could do without one, they give more power then an ez (dyno proven by myself), and clear/check codes and adjust tire sizes to boot!

rholte, you hit the nail on the head! I forgot about having my VA CPC plugged in and really don't know why it would have kept it from programming it right, but it did! Reset it to stock, test drove it, all was fine.
Turned it off, hooked up the hypertech again, no codes detected, and reprogrammmed to level three! Short test drive seemed to have more power and felt stronger than with the VA CPC.
I will drive it more tomorrow and report back afterwards. Thanks rholte.

Drove the 30 miles to work this morning, and all is fine. Truck runs very strong, still feels like it is running stronger than with the VA CPC. I am going to drive it a few days with the Hypertech on stage 3, then put it back to stock mode and hook the VA back up and see how it feels again. I really want to try running both together, but am not sure if the Hypertech adjust the timing too, like the VA. That might be too much, but I don't think so.

I've going to pull the Edge EZ off my 2001 so I can install the Hypertech, but do I need to remove my turnbuckle also. What all is the Hypertech reprograming? Is the Hypertech allowing more boost, or is it making power some other way? I've sold Hypertechs to alot of customers with Powerstrokes and Duramaxes and not had any problems. I'm anxious to try this on the Cummins. Thanks.

I think the turnbuckle won't be a problem. I left my boost elbow on my 99 and did not have any problem. I was hittting about 28 lbs boost and did not see any codes from it. It definetly is adding fuel, maybe some timing advance but I am not sure. It will reprogram for tire size if you tell it too, but I haven't sucessfully done that.

It does run strong in level three. All is good so far.

Well I pulled the EZ, but left the turnbuckle attached and installed the Power Programmer. The truck feels strong but doesn't seem to hit as hard as the EZ. I reconnected the programmer today to adjust for tire size and had an overboost code. I cleared the code and reinstalled the progam, then called Hypertech and they said not to disable the wastegate. So I'm at level 3, speedo is dead nuts with my 285/75-16 Yokohamas and the truck runs great. I reconnected after removing the turnbuckle and have no codes. It still doesn't seem as good as the EZ down low, but has a good midrange pull. Hopefully right where I need it for the new Rage'n toy hauler thats ordered. I'm happy.

I also found a overboost code before I reconnected my practical solutions boost module. I am also running with my VA box hooked back up again now. Lots of low end and upper end now!

I'm thinking that this would be great with the EZ and turnbuckle but I'm sure my stock transmission would be toast in no time. As soon as I get the transmission upgrades, I think I'll try it with the EZ and the 275 injectors that are still in the box. For now, I think the Hypertech will do.

Your right about the stock transmission, that TC would not hold up long. I had the VA and 275 injector combo for about a year with light towing, but when I added the stage III injectors the TC gave it up in about a month!

Does the Hypertech tuner VIN lock like Superchips does? My tuner cannot be used on another truck even if I put mine back to stock. The exeption being the diagnostic side.

No, that's what I like about Hypertech. You can put yours back to stock and then try it out on your buddys truck if you like. I've sold a ton of them for the Powerstrokes and Duramax, we'll see how the Cummins works out.
