Man, that isn't good at all. Hope there aren't very many fatalities.

Glad that didn't happen when I was up there over the winter.

WOW , this is the worst case scenario, with all the roads Now Under construction, 36 Closed, 35E/694 Split 2 more years under construction,, 62 Crosstown 4 more Years Under construction. They are going to have to allow Trucks south bound on 35E Parkway,Trucks now have to drive completely around the cities West/East. 280 will not support the 140,000 people a Day that Cross 35w. 94 in the commons is always stop&go during the Day. I don't know were to start on the lives lost on that Bridge... This Day equals in My life as High as 911.

I turned on the news and couldn't believe my eyes. That has to be one of the biggest civil engineering failures of modern times especially considering it was not weather or seismically induced.

Thank the Lord some of the lanes were closed and there wasn't nearly as much rush hour traffic on the bridge as there typically is. And the close call for all the kids on that school bus, wow

Wow!!! I can not believe it. Definitely need some prayers here this evening. My thoughts & prayers are with the families of those missing.

The bridge was 40 years old and passed inspection in 2004. Don't know how often they inspect them. It didn't just collapse 'cause it wasn't heavy duty enough. Something went wrong. It's been hot here lately, maybe that had something to do with it. "Road blow" in the exact wrong place?? I wouldn't rule out weather just yet.

I also didnt realize that was a full span bridge! It was about a 2k' span, with no supports into the river, so that rules out a barge hitting it. Its definately crazy, and the bridge was actually inspected last year and found to be in perfect condition. The only needs were resurfacing and maybe a deck replacement by 2010, but that has nothing to do with the superstructure of the bridge, as the deck has nothing to do with the support of the bridge.

Obviously the death toll will rise after today as divers search the cars at the bottom of the river, but its amazing that only 4 have been confirmed dead at this point! 20 people are still missing though. Even if those 20 people are found to be dead, for the amount of cars that could have been on that bridge at that time usually, its an amazingly low number.

We were going to start a Project In Hastings MN (TWR Construction), I have Now postpone it until Monday, With this tragedy We will be staying in Hastings, The Guys opted for Drive Pay Until this. . Time to find rooming arrangements. .

WOW... . This has hit my office too close... .

A co- worker came in this morning and was visibly upset. She has friends that are un- accounted for. We are waiting to hear more news from her. Boss may let her have off the rest of the day.

The bridge was qualified as deficiant, not degrading, but what it means is that the bridge is not failing, but is approching the point when upgrades and repairs will be required.

Not to turn this political, but after getting past the shock of it all, and past the emotions felt for the victims, I have gotten down right ****** off. This damn state has been pushing off bridge repairs, road upgrades and many other NEEDED road projects and dumped all the taxes collected into light rail, and other mass transit projects! The Light Rail system has cost double what they first projected, ad has cost over 1 billion to construct, and now just approved a 900k dollar line between St Paul and MPLS. Yet they whine about not having enough money to fix roads. Also, the Light Rail is being subsidised by the state tax dollar because it cant sustain itself on its own, yup, it doesnt generate enough income to pay for itself! Then, a damn Democrat Congress person has the odacity to blame the Republicans 3 hours... THREE HOURS, after the collapse because they wont get on board to add a higher gas tax to pay for road repairs. BUT, he fails to mention that the tax law that just passed in Nov. that took all vehicle sales tax and put it into a transportaion fund to only be used for trasnportation. BUT, 40%, FOURTY PERCENT, was taken out of the fund and placed into the mass transit account.

I pray to the Lord above that he helps the broken families of this tragic event, but I also pray that the people in this state wake and realize that we have put the "earth and enviroment" ahead of human lives but jepordizing our lives on unsafe roads and bridges, so that we can pack earth friendly people like sardines into a so called eco-friendly train. Sorry, but today I have just gotten more and more ****** off about the situation.

The fact of the matter is that bridge has been undersized for some time now, the 35 Coridor through MPLS has been undersized for way to long, but no one seems to care about fixing it. That bridge should have been replaced 10 years ago, not because of possible failure, but to accomidate the traffic that uses it with a 10 lane bridge but it wasnt. Instead they install traffic control BS at all the onramps to "control the flow of traffic", and fangled up this great idea called light rail.

And people wonder why I hate the city. I have driven on that bridge many times, and truthfully, for some reason that bridge always made me grind my teeth while crossing it, especially in stop and go traffic. And bridges usually dont bother me, hell I drove across that old rickety suspension Royal Gorge bridge... and those of you that have, you know how kinda creepy that is, and that didnt bother me.

Here is your answer as to why it most likely fell like it did... found this on I-35W Bridge, Minneapolis, MN

A University of Minnesota Civil Engineer in a report to MN-DOT recently noted that this bridge is considered to be a non-redundant structure. That is, if any one member fails, the entire bridge can collapse. A key factor is that there are only four pylons holding up the arch. Any damage to any one pylon would be catastropic. The textbook example of a non-redundant bridge is the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River. It failed shortly before Christmas in 1967 resulting in 46 deaths. A single piece of hardware failed due to a tiny manufacturing defect. But that piece was non-redundant, and the entire bridge collapsed into the icy river. Today, bridge engineers design bridges so that any single piece of the bridge can fail without causing the entire bridge to collapse. It is tragic that the I-35W bridge was built a few years too early to benefit from that lesson.

Basicly, it was designed without any backup, any one beam fails and it all goes down all at once. If you think about it, if one of the arched beams failed close to the middle, it would come down just like that.

Still havent totally grasped this yet.

I wonder though, I noticed that this year, my truck suffered from some serious rust after this winter. I wonder if a change in road treatments might have something to do with this. I know they have experimanted with many different road treatments for ice, but makes ya think sometimes. Plus, this bridge actually had a system for de-icing. Pumped the stuff right onto the bridge using a system of pipes. Maybe a pipe this winter srung a small leak, and over the past year since the last inspection, it acclerated a point to rust abnormally fast, and well, cause what you saw. :(

You forgot too mention all the liberal programs that Have made their Poor planning our Emergency and have put at risk all legal citizens welfare at his expense and rob them of personal safety even on the road ways. . I am sick of being robbed, and than have some politician say he is doing me a favor.

Here we go again with the light rail. Republicans just have to pin it on something else. If pawlenty really wanted to fix the bridge in 2005 when it was found to have defects he could have raised taxes or asked the feds for assistance. In fact I was reading today that as early as 1990 the bridge was found to have some sort of defect I dont believe we were "dumping" money into light rail then. How about this twins stadium that pawlenty wants so bad that was supposed to have its groundbreaking today. All that money could have made a pretty safe bridge.

The I-35 bridge is a FEDERAL bridge meaning it takes FEDERAL $$$ to fix it. Even if MN had pulled their collective heads from their collective rear ends, nothing would have been done at a state level because it's not the state's bridge.

At least that's what I heard this morning.

As far as the political issues go... . both sides are the same in my mind

they point the finger at everyone else. No one with take the blame for anything.

This state is one of the highest taxed states of the union and it has plenty of money to spend... it just gets spent on band aid fixes and raises, and to see what other kinds of laws they can come up with to justify there pay.

I really believe its time for a house cleaning. People are only going to put up with this for so long and then.....

I would imagine that fuel prices are going to go up around here because fuel can't be delivered as easily:mad:

I live in rural Mn and with the prices of everything going sky high, people are getting tapped out!!

I too am praying for all involved in the bridge accident.

Dennis

What I found amazing is that , on CNN, Bush made the statement that Federal funds were immediatly available for the bridge disaster and any other federal assistance would also be immediatly available.

What I find amazing is why werent these same "federal funds" available when Katrina hit?

Now that this has happened in Mn, ALL the states have suddenly woke up to the fact that if it happened there it could happen here as well.

It amazes me that it takes a tragedy like this to wake up the idiot elected officals to get off their overpaid duffs and do something about the problem that has been there but they couldnt see it.

OK Off my soapbox.

I saw a deal on MSN where they have IMMEDIATELY set inspectors out to most of the nations Major bridges since this tragic event. They were expecting to inspect all of those major bridges within the month. They do not want a repeat of this. Unfortunatly history has to repeat itself for people to learn it seems.

I know through friends 3 people that were involved in this. My roommates Brother drove over the bridge with his fully loaded semi 20min before it went down.
My Xfiancee, has a good friend that was on the bridge when it went down. She felt it start shaking, knew it wasn't normal, and something told her to floor it. She did, rear-ending the car in front of her pushing it into another car, and that car into another. The car behind her fell into the water and was crushed by debris. She ended up with 4 cracked ribs, a broken arm and inturnal bleeding. She was still helping pull people from the wreckage!
Another friend of mine does construction, and knows people that were working on the bridge. The men working on the bridge had experience doing that kind of work, and were hearing noises all day. Noises they couldn't pin down what they were. They were joking, "I wonder if the bridge is going to be standing when we go home to nite. " Ironically, they were way to close to the truth.
