Well I am back, I bought a new '05 2500 SWB. Man did I miss this thing. So far with 115 miles on it I am getting 15. 3mpg on the display (much better than the 04. 5 I had), I hope this keeps up. But anyway glad to be back.

Anything I should know about the 05 vs 03,04,04. 5 thats is good or bad?

Thanks,

Russ

Is that highway or city? My 04. 5 gets 16 city and 23 highway (under 70mph) over 70 and it drops very fast. Mine is a 4x4 3500 with an automatic and limited slip. :)

well for starters the 05's have the liftpump in the tank and you may or may not have a plastic intercooler. i think there was also something about the ECM being twice as powerful. i guess it was like going from a pentium4 to an apple G5:). also there are some extra guide vanes in the intake elbow. oh, and your auto should have idle control via the cruise buttons.

Hey Russ,

I also have a 2005 2500 SWB Auto with 3. 73's. I have 4000 miles on it now (in 2 months) and am getting 17 in the city and 20+ on th hwy as long as I stay below 72 mph. These things are great!

I've been reading new '05 owners have been getting decent mileage. Hope this is a sign DC has gotten a few things ironed out and this trend will keep up. Vaughn

The 48RE does not allow you to lockout OD..... however, my understanding is that when you put it in tow/haul it does lock the torque converter and it stays locked until you take it out of T/H.

Had a chance to try mine out this past week on our first big tow with the 5vr and I was definetly impressed. Here is my post about it.

23 mpg?

BS.

Sorry Tim. Not BS. I could get that if I could drive 55. At 67 or so I get just over 20 on the highway. Give it time Tim and you will figure out the best speed for mileage with your truck as well. I've got 19K miles on mine now and expect mpg to go up even more with more miles.

I think you also have to have the parking brake engaged to get the CC high idle feature to work but I'm not sure.

Well so far my first tank is coming to an end and the display is reading 14. 8mpg. My driving habbits included 75-85mph on the highway to work, alot of downtown city driving and 20 miles of towing my empty boat trailer 3500lbs. This a much better rate than my 04. 5 was doing. The best I got outta that truck was 13. 7 mpg. So hoping this will get better, but being at 15 is not bad. I would love 17-18 but I like to drive my way, not slow :D .

Search on Fuel Tank Vents (to offer protection from water ingestion within the fuel system)... . there are several posts... . some say the 05's come with a hose(s) attached, mine did not so you should check yours.....

In regards to milage, everyone's all over the board (think it depends on how much they smoke / drink)... . I put my foot into it as I didnt get this nice motor to drive like a 80 yr old..... so my milage is ave around 15 (not towing)... bottom line is it's not a civic ... . still much better than my previous gasser! If you drink a 12 pack you can get 80mpg... . towing against a headwind :)

Dont tow for first 500 miles (as per the manual)... .

Learn how to drain the water in fuel... . (and show your wife how if your married)

Set your tire pressure right as per manual... . big diff in ride quality... . morons at my dealer had too much air in tires...

Everyone recommneds guages so they cant all be wrong (just havent done mine yet)

Enjoy the truck, i love the thing... .

My '03 got 15. 8 on the first tank but after about 5000 miles it would always get 20+ on the highway at 70-75. Best was 23. At 80 it would drop to 19. 5 or so. It was a 4x2. Vaughn

That's why I didn't say I'm lucky to get 14. 5 in town. Get a box and you won't be slow off the line anymore! I'm at about 4500' elevation. Sea level does not net me any better fuel mileage.
