The wife and I were at the local fair the other night and she got a chance to sit in the back of the Mega Cab. She instantly fell in love with it and so did I, except for the short bed. We have a baby on the way and with an 84 lb German Shorthaired Pointer, we could use the room for road trips which we do quite often. I still have a hard time getting used to the thought of a short bed, so I asked Dr Z the question on His Mini Site. I was surprised at the response because someone asked something about one of the cars and the reply was "We don't comment on future product offerings". Here is what they emailed me as a response to my question about the Mega Cab with the 8' bed:

I'm wondering if those of us interested in the Mega Cab with the long bed let them know that there is demand, that they might consider production?? We've got thousands of members here. Wouldn't hurt to send an email. :D

Interesting, but that would make for a REALLY long truck.

So what, not like it would be much longer than a crew cab 8ft box furd, and those sell like crazy. Honestly, the people wanting a truck like this really dont care how long it is, otherwise they wouldnt even be considering it.

Not really, I mean only an 8" bed? Now if it had an 8' bed, then that would make for a long truck! haha sorry... had to do it. ;) :-laf

I would have bought one if it was available. I might still if the new engine turns out good. Around here, parking is not an issue, nor turning around. The big issue we have is trying to get enough junk crammed in, on, or hanging off the truck to survive in the event of a break down or getting stuck.

No, the MegaCab LB dually isn't the truck for everyone, but Dodge better get off their duff and offer it with competitive GVWR and GCWR if they want to compete for the 5th wheel RV towing market. All one has to do is look around - GM and Ford both offer crew cab long bed duallies. If it weren't for the 6. 0 diesel, Ford would have absolutely knocked the ball out of the park with the TowBoss 350 crew cab dually - 13K GVWR and 26K GCWR. Dodge's answer - 10. 5K GVWR, 23K GCWR and a short bed truck that requires a sliding hitch, and even that isn't compatable with some pin box arrangements.

So, Dodge, ignore us RVers in the marketplace at your own peril. It certainly seems that's what you're doing now.

I would buy the Megacab with an 8 foot bed tomorrow. The Quad Cab with an 8 foot bed is actually longer than the Megacab. Currently the longest Ford is 262. 4 inches. The Megacab is 248 inches. If it had an 8 foot bed it would be about 8 inches longer than the Ford... not that big of a difference. The Quadcab with 8 foot bed is 250 inches. The QC and Mega are on the same length/wheelbase frame of 160 inches. The Ford is 172. The Megacab is not going to come unless Dodge makes a different frame... likely the reason it is not here now. They would sell like hotcakes. 8 inches longer than the Ford is not going to keep it out of any garages. Dodge would steal sales like no tomorrow if they built the truck.

I have seen some ford cab and chassis that look like the frame is stretched longer than what an 8 ft bed would be. so how long are there 4 door cab and chassis?

As soon as the Mega Cab came out I told my wife " I wish they made that in a long bed" I would get one!!! But I just got an 06 so I got to sit still for just a lil, or tade it in!!!!! Man I could be into a long bed!!! longer means better on the open road!!!

I will buy a Mega Cab, but not until it comes with an eight foot bed. Period. (it will need better air conditioning as well)

Even if they cut down on the Mega Cab by 8" to match the length of the ford, I'd get one. That cabin is HUGE! I still think it'd be bigger than the ford even with the 8" taken off.

I've driven my buddies Crew Cab F-250 with a long bed and it's noticable that it's longer than my long bed quad cab, but in no way would it keep me from getting one.

Long bed megacab would be sweet, and hopefully then they could put the nice dually fenders off of the quad cab on them. Those current mega cab duallys are the butt ugliest thing ever. Not sure what idiot dreamed up those fenders.

Not to be a smar @ss, but wouldn't that be a Quad-Cab with a longbed then??

I think the biggest reason that they don't make a crew with an 8' bed is because they don't sell as many trucks as Ford or Chevy. They are trying to maximize profit by using the same chasis.

Me personally, I like the Mega-Cab but I would have been happy with a crew cab with similar dimensions to the Ford. That and the stupid price that trucks are going for now is the reason that I am enjoying my 04. 5.

FWIW, I talked to the dealer about this yesterday. He said the explanation he was given from DC was the truck would require some special license because of overall length to be produced. I have NO idea if he was just blowing smoke out his butt. He said they were ordering Bed deletes and having the people get aftermarket bed made for them...

I am going with smoke out his butt. When I bought my truck I heard at least 4 reasons from four dealers as to why there is no megacab with 8 foot bed. All of them were excuses not reasons.

The reason that there is no MC with an 8' bed is that the frame would be too long to physically maneuver through the current Saltillo plant set-up. From what I've been told is that there are a couple corners that the frame must go around that there isn't enough room to make it. Supposedly they have measured it exactly to make sure. Until the production process is changed (probably during the next redesign) they phyically can't make that long of a truck in the plant. I would expect it to happen for the next generation Ram though.
