Want to feel smarter?

This is one of (if not) the most difficult posts I have ever posted. Some of the coverage by the media is flat out wrong, so I thought I would try to clear up some of the stereotypes getting thrown out there about Snipers.

Watching the news tonight, I discovered that I am a member of the "Sniper sub culture" The events of this week have been very hard on myself and all members of the tactical shooting community. Military personnel and law enforcement personnel use the skills to shoot long range in order to protect life, not take it. Unfortunately, the news media is throwing us all into one category. I can assure you that every tactical shooter I know would like nothing more than to get this killer in a rifle scopes and deal with him using extreme prejudice. Make no mistake about it, this shooter whom the media calls a Sniper is nothing more than a cold blooded child killer.

The Media have mentioned a few websites on the news and on the Internet. One of those "Snipers Paradise". The staff that make up this site are military personnel who are some of the most professional people I have met. They have been contacted by news agencies all around the world for information. SP has refused to comment or give any information to the news media since the tools we use and the methods we use would most likely be broadcast to the world, and thereby educate all the idiots that don't know how to shoot long range.

Now some congressmen are wanting to have the FTC investigate the sale and marketing of Sniper Rifles. Keep in mind that Sniper Rifles use a . 308, whereas the killer has been using a . 223. My Rifle weighs about 16 pounds and is a PIA to load in the truck, let alone carry around. Some members of congress are jumping on the bandwagon taking advantage of the news media coverage to further there cause. Any hunting rifle could be used to do the same thing this killer is doing in MD.

I will not comment, nor speculate on what tactics this guy is using, nor anything else about this case since the police don't need anyone to "Monday morning quarterback" and add to the mis-information.

The best thing I can recommend is to be constantly aware of your surroundings. The police need all the help they can get, and together we can rid society of this menace. My heart goes out to all those affected.

God Bless

John

Saw that crap on ABC "News" this evening and immediately thought of you! :D

Seriously, you are absolutely correct. I particulary liked the part about cataloging a slug and brass from every weapon sold in this country, along with the name & address of the original owner. Where they gonna keep all that stuff?

Hey John,

Yeah, I saw it this morning. What a pile of horse dung! And they've been talking about the "long" shots being made - I could make those shots with any piece of crap from Wal-mart (the ones they called long on TV that I saw were all less than 100yds). It really discredits what a real (military) sniper is all about.

I have sympathy for the victims :( and anger  for what is happening - but they must remember that a PERSON is pulling that trigger. The rifle is NOT the problem.

Ok, off my soapbox for now.

I too feel sympathy for the victims. I hope they string up the person doing this by his testicles..... publicly.

I'm sure the MMM, chucky schumer's and sara brady's will be pressuring the powers that be to ban such weapons next.

Then it will be "Lever action and pump action rifles & shotguns can be fired at very high firing rates"

"Shotguns have to be banned because of the devistatioin they can cause"

And the list goes on.

What Bill Lins said scares me, because it's probibally being seriously considered. :(

Used to be respected...

Amen to all that you have said John... although I am not in the same boat as you, I remember the pride that I had when I was Captain of my high school rifle team. We as a team took pride in our skills, and were respected by many other "non-shooters".

It has been a long time since you can "openly" be proud about being a marksman, or in your case a professional shooter. Seems like there is more support for the "openly aberrant" people in this society.

I thought that after 9-11 the country might wake up, take heed, and appreciate people who are capable with other skills and crafts which make their lives safer, but unfortunately the "gangsta rappas" still get top billing. It will have to get much worse in this society before things come around.

Better

I think we better put a sniper on high ground near every gas station in the Washington area. It will take a good sniper to find this creep, he by no means is marksman, he is a coward! If anyone lives in this area, please be extra aware. God bless.

A few states are already doing this with handgun sales. Funny thing is, that with over 19,000 weapons "registered" in this fashion, NOT ONE CRIME has been solved by having the slugs & brass on file! I say "registered" because in actuality that is what it amounts to.

This is just all part of there big plan to completely disarm us Free men. It is really not right they aren't blaming the guys as much as they are the type of weapon used. From the first day there was some BATF expert(former drip) in front of the camera show what types of guns it could be, He even showed an XP-100 pistol during this farse. They will chip away at us one thing at a time until they have it all. They are after our high powered hunting rifles with Scope now.

Just last night I realized that my sons have already lost freedoms I had at there age. They can no longer walk down to the river alone and hunt ducks they must have an adult (guardian) with them to be in procession of a firearm.

I feel bad for the professional shooting community. I hate the way the media blow everything out of context and use improper terminology.

I've never qualified below the level of a Marine Corps Rifle Expert in my life. I can reliably hit a man size target at 500 meters w/an M16 and iron sights, but I, in no way, consider myself to be even close to a sniper. I'm a damn good shot, and maybe with a lot of training, I could meet that level. This guy is NOT a sniper, this guy is probably some idiot with a Mini-14 or something and should be shot and strung up for the public too see.

He is a coward not a sniper.

Got to give to an at-a-boy for making this thread. I feel the same way you do.

Those "so called long shots" could have been done with a handgun.
