well they're in and WORKING... i used the DiPricol boost/egt... i did not have the time to wire in the lights yet and it was a bugger to get them in(that rubber grommet in the firewall is a killer). . i hope finding that 5amp illumination fuse is not too difficult... i must confess i did not have the nerve to drill pre-turbo. . i sat there this morning for an hour mulling it over and chickened out and went for the exhaust elbow... all i could think of was screwing the drilling and tapping up and all of those shavings going down into the manifold and missing some with the magnet and zapping the turbo, so i wussied out and drilled the elbow... . anyways i do not haul very much, so i think everything will be cool... on a test run @ 65mph the boost was about 8 and the egt about 500, so if i add the 300 or so for the location difference the egt would be about 800... i guess that is acceptable... thanks to all who gave me comments and advise... later #ad

Hay Dustoff,

It's great doing your own accessories, isn't it. Saves money, pride in workmanship and you know how it works.

I installed all my accessories/improvements and am getting ready to install painless wiring and ISSPRO diesel thermal sutdown kit.

Keep on accessorising! #ad

Wiredawg,

How does the ISSPRO diesel thermal shutdown kit compare to the Diesel Turbo Life Saver in Geno's catalog. I have been thinking of getting the DTLS because I am getting tired of sitting in the truck for 2 minutes everytime I stop.

Thanks in advance for the info!

I also installed my own gauges on Friday. It looked tough and scary at first but I just went slow and was very careful. They look great on the "A" pillar. Geno's unit does a nice job. The wiring was easy but I am still waiting to drill for the thermocouple. I want to go pre- but do not want to remove the turbo. The magnet makes me nervous. Not sure what to do. #ad
Need to screw my courage to the stickin place and get it done... . The VDO transmission temp and boost gauge work great and look cool at night. I also took out the silencer ring. That was the easiest thing I have done so far.

Any hints on drilling the EGT "hole" without removing the turbo??? Any success stories?

My wife "left" when I did my SPA DG111, thermo couple pre-turbo.

CAREFUL SLOW DRILLING AND TAPPING, LOADED BOTH BIT AND TAP W/ VASOLINE REPEATED TO CATCH SHAVINGS AND CHASED W/ MAGNET AS WELL.

No Turbo removal for me... just a hole in an exhaust manifold and one in the A-pillar trim... . NOTHING QUITE LIKE DRILLING HOLES IN A PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL AND BRAND NEW $35K+ RIG.

LOVED EVERY AGONIZING MINUTE OF IT!

dustoff... I have the same gauges, plus their oil temp gauge. I had the same concerns about drilling the manifold and decided to remove the turbo pre-drilling. Many will say "not needed". I just did it for peace of mind. Anyway, it really is a great feeling when your done and know that you did it yourself. I don't think you will be real happy with the egt. gauge when you illuminate same at night, very hard to read, unless DiPricol has changed their egt. gauge since my purchase. That's my only complaint with the DiPricol gauge.
I tapped into the #5 mini fuse for the power source for the gauges, it allow you to dim the gauge lights along with the dash lights.

Also installed my combo gauge today, very easy just love doing things myself. SHLEETS go for it,i installed mine pre turbo just use some axle grease on the drill bit and tap,i also had the wife hold the wet-dry vac next to the bit when drilling it even sucked the grease off,no shavings..... A few beers helped #ad

Eventer,
Check out https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/000507.html for info on the ISSPro turbo temp monitor. The big difference between it and the Diesel life saver is that it monitors the actual post turbo EGT and shuts down when a safe temp is reached. The life saver is simply a timer.

Steve,

Thanks for the post and thread. First of all let me say I am electrically challenged so what you did, I understood, but I don't think I could bring myself to do this. With my luck, I would blow up my batteries the first time I started the truck after the install!

However, just in case I can screw up the courage, a question...

I like the looks of the SPA guages (EGT/Boost). If I purchased the applicable sensor(s), would this work with your diagram?

Thanks!

I'm not that familiar with the SPA gauges. DavidVT and MCrossley were working on that at one time using my schematic but I'm not sure if they got it done or not. You might try emailing them. DavidVT posted in that message so you can get his email address there.

OK folks:
How in the world did you get the wires past the fiber cover under the dash and fire-wall?I poked, shoved, stabbed, jiggled pushed, and have not gotten the coathanger to a point of being seen under the dash. So I stopped that project and went to another. Help! I need some assistance on this one.
Thanks #ad

well i got the power hooked up and things went ok... they illuminate well at night and BIGSAINT you are right, the egt is not easy to read... . the orange needle does not illuminate like the boost guage needle does... i am a little disappointed in that... you would think dipricol could make them the same so to give the same look... but other than that they are working ok... thanks all... cya

I drilled slowly... . nervously... . and used a magnet and a shop vac and more magnets. I tapped slowly... . nervously... and used a magnet and a shop vac. Unbelieveable!!! It works! Thanks for the help and the encouragement.

Note: The VDO Vision series EGT gauge illuminates almost exactly like the factory gauges.

Thanks again. I love this TDR forum.

I know what ya mean about the DiProcal EGT needle not lighting up. Not a real big deal, they look a heck of a lot better than the ISSPRO's I had I had first.

Didn't even think to look at the VDO's

Piers of BD stated in another posting the following regarding the post turbo readings.

"The old rule of 300 degrees difference is only somewhat accurate on an engine producing 20 lbs or less of boost. Once you get above 20lbs boost add 10 degrees for every lb of boost plus the 300. "
