I could hear the lift pump on my 99 but TXRam noticed that my 01 is quiet. I cycled the key several times tonight and never heard it.

Is it dying or dead?

Did you try bump starting... . ??

Turn the key to the start position... and just when you hear the starter engaging in the flywheel... let the key go and then you should here it...

Pump should run for 20 - 30 seconds... .

Thanks Gordon, I tried the bump start as you described and the pump is working. I'm gonna get TXRam to help check the lift pump pressure pretty soon.

The newer

Pumps are very quiet. My original buzzed constantly, and the latest replacement type makes a quick short buzz with initial key on, then it's silent. Sounds like yours is good.

They have it in the ECM to where the lift pump cycles on start up, instead of running for a while. If you bump the starter you will hear it running continuous. When I got a reflash on my 01 a while back it made the lift pump very quiet. So all is well I would imagine, its to prevent too high of pressure on start up.

I never have been able to hear mine - pressure is fine, but I'm slightly hearing impaired... Sure could hear the added Carter pusher pump tho', until a few mods... ;) :D

My 01' lift pump will "buzz" for about 2 seconds when you turn the ignition switch on. If you "bump" the starter, it will run/buzz for about 25 seconds. I can't answer as to why all of our pumps don't act the same in identical situiations. :)

If you have a fuel pressure gauge you can see the pointer swing to psi and then return to zero and remain there until you turn key to start eng The gauge will give you a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that it is working ok and will get you there and back. Ron in Louisville KY P. S could't hear the pump any way have to see the gauge.   :D

I mentioned it to 243 after I drove his truck. I'm just attuned to my Carter mounted on the frame I guess - pretty loud buzz without the engine running.

We'll check his pressure pretty soon - I need to get the Schrader adapter for my gauge set-up (mine's a 99 so I haven't needed it).
