My dad's 2001 is so much quieter in the cab than my 1996, (and just to rub it in, he has removed his muffler/resonator). Has anybody had any luck in reducing the interior sound level in there trucks? If so, please tell me how you did it and what you used.

My interior sound level was reduced significantly when I finally connected my downpipe, which was dumped right under the passenger seat, to my tailpipe.

My interior sound level also went up a LOT when I removed the carpeting/back wall-organizer thingy... .

I'm putting in that nifty Rockford Fosgate spray in goop all over my cab... . I'll tell everyone how it works out.

KB0OU is right, put something, carpet, dynamat, Ice and Water Dam (for roofs)... anything on the bare metal behind the back seat, whether it be reg cab or ex cab and it makes a big difference.

just a word of wisdom: If you plan on using your truck right after you spray or install anything into your cab that stinks... . you might want to have another plan or use different products. I used some adhesive to hold on the crappy fabric insulation to the backside of my door panels... . it smelled really bad for a couple of days.

The same can be said for eating Taco Bell on a long trip... . keep your hand on them window cranks/switches!!

Something has changed or wrong with your truck. I have yet to drive a stock 12V that was not MUCH quieter then a stock 24V.

Now less the engine fan on my 96 and fully warmed up, I am approaching Duramax quiet.

We have 99's, 2000, and 5 new 2001s. They are much louder then the few 12V including mine I have been around.

Well this is interesting. I've only ridden on one 24 valve, and the only other 12 valve I've been around was an early generation. So I don't have much to compare to. Maybe the truck is missing some of the standard insulation/sound deadener?

The actual sound level may be the same in dbs between dad's truck and mine. But his sounds are all deeper and not as noticable. It's easy to talk to the passenger in a normal voice. On mine, the noise is higher pitched. It clack-ity-clacks to the point that when driving you have to raise your voice to be heard. I can't hear my 2. 5 year old in the back seat unless she's excited to be talking louder than usual. It's getting very old, but the truck has always been this way. (Perhaps a little worse, gradual changes are hard to detect and memory fades. )

I had thought about getting that dynomat and putting it under the carpet. But a lot of the noise seems to be comming from the firewall and all around. If my wife puts a pillow or blanket on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel near the dash it seems to help. I saw an article on blankets, but for $850, the will have to wait a long time.

BTW, the valves were just adjusted along with all other required maintenance late last year. The truck now has 153k on it and is a 5 speed.

You have oil in your 12v when running? :D

You must be missing some insulation or something. My 12v is a lot quiter than any 24v that I have ridden in.

Matter of fact: all the 12v's I've ridden in have been quiter than the 24v's. I think it is we only have half as many valves opertaing at any one time! ;)

You must have one of those noisey pumps then?

I have a 1996 12 valve. After I'm shifted and going my truck sounds similar to a gas rig. Pretty quiet. I have a standard cab though and that may be the difference. . I'm just a hair louder since my "cat" moved into the garage to look for mice! :D
