Help, Please!

I have a friend who has been driving Ford gassers, for years, now. He and his wife are about to retire, shortly, and would like to upgrade to a diesel. Their Ford is an 80's vintage 460, 4-sp.

He has some serious health issues that makes it hard for him to drive a stick and his wife is somewhat afraid to drive a stick.

They want to "fulltime RV", so will be driving quite a bit. So, they are looking for an automatic. Their trailer is about 30' and they will have a camper shell that sticks up above the back of the cab, for storage.

One of the things they want is the 4-door Quad Cab, for extra storage. It seems like the Quad Cab's came out the same time as the 24 valve Cummins did.

My question is, What do you guys think about the 24 Valve engines in so far as being durable and trouble-free? I'd hate to recommend a problamatic engine, to him. He doesn't need anymore problems than he has, right now. I think he'd be pretty happy with a stock truck with maybe an exhaust system and a fresh air intake. Also, if you keep the truck pretty much stock, do the auto's seem to hold up very well?

Thank You, very much, for your opinions and your help.

If he's gonna tow that much I would reccomend a new truck with warantee or plan on spending the 4-5K on an the transmission upgrade. The upgrade would be good anyhow as he'll want an exhaust brake also. Jake
