I don't get it

I know our trucks have a fun clutch and I've heard mine switch on and off so why can't we just wire in a switch and be done with it? The horton kit is nice, but way too much $$. The stock fan clutch seems like a switch would work.

i believe that your stock fan clutch is a mechanical lockup clutch. no electrics there. .

So if it is mechanical does it engage with the thermostat? What makes it engage the clutch? I thought it just spun constantly as it is always in motion when I have the hood popped.
