I'm lugging a 3000 pound camper in the bed, and it DIDN'T come with extra brakes!!! I'm redoing my brakes about once a year, and am only satisfied with themn for about the first month after turning and replacing. Any suggestions other than nice big PFord brakes?

I have a 92 service truck that I work in and use it for vacation to pull my camper. I have the same problem with brakes. Wolf Creek Pass usually takes care of them in short order. I am buildong a new truck with a standard and a BD exhaust brake(a crew cab dually). They say an exhaust brakes makes these trucks bearable. Mark

When I bought mine it was almost driven into the ground and I've been working to dig it back out. I could stand on the brake pedal and it would slowly come to a stop. I went to Checker Auto and bought a reman power brake booster, front calipers (they were only $11 each! The brake booster was shot! this thing has brakes now! happy haulin, Scott

I tried the carbon mets and they warped my rotors in less than 10,000 miles. It turned them blue!

Mark ---This is a strange one. Carbons usually dissipate the heat better and cause less warpage. The rotors will become very smooth & shiny dark color. This is normal. I have installed thousands of sets and have had less warpage problems than with organic or semi mets. Lots of guys in the TDR use carbons and have good luck.

Guys---Your brake system is a little smaller than the later ones but it can be made to stop good with a little modification. Actuall the front pad material has as much surface as the later ones. Your slider calipers don't give as much trouble either if the sliders are kept lubed. Carbon metalic is a must on the front and carbo met shoes on the back with larger bore cylinders will improve overall braking. I owned a 93 dually and they can be made to STOP. ---Sam

Do you have some contact info for this company R. E. ? I'm going to have to do something with my rear brakes soon, and it's looking like it's going to be drums, shoes and wheel cylinders this time. Might as well drop the cash on a disc conversion kit now.

Exhaust Brake (recognizing problems with the Auto transmission.

On my '93, with 5 speed, At 106K I finally pulled the rear drums to check. Still had min of 40% and everthing looked good, but I went ahead and replaced shoes and cylinders.
At126K, the front pads were still near 50% and rotors looked great.
I pulled a 12K fiver a minimum of 25K of those miles, but I use the exhaust brake all the time----not just towing, but at vertually ever slow down and stop. Most of the time, the service brakes only provide the last little bit of stop. Also no clutch problems yet when I sold it at 126K

Sam, that is what I thought about the carbon mets. It sure warped 'em though. I have not had any truoble since I went back to the regular brakes. My service truck weighs 8500 lbs. all the time and all I do is stop and go driving in town. When I do take it on vacation it gets a workout, too, from towing a trailer. No more though, my crew cab is just about finished for my trip to Canada this summer. DB brake and a 5 speed will help the old binders down Slumgulian Pass!

I just did the front brakes on my 93 and put the Performance Friction Carbon Metalic pads on. I've run them on the 1/2 ton Chevy that I pulled my 7K lb car trailer with for 7 years without any warp that I know of.

On the rear wheel clyinders, what year truck has the size that I want for the size increase? I may go ahead and pull the rear wheels off and put the bigger ones on as my truck didn't want to stop as well as I wanted it to when I pull my car trailer with it.

Mark,
I just purchased a set of carbon metallic front pads, but I have not installed them yet. I have always ran organic or semi metallic without any problems of brake fading or disc warpage when they got hot. The guy at the auto parts counter talked me into purchasing the carbon metallic pads. He claimed better stopping power, and better dissapation of heat. It sounds like I should return them and stick to what I know will work well. My experience has been as follows; Metallic pads will last longer than organic, but if metallic pads are installed the rotors will be worn pretty thin at the next brake change and will probably have to be replaced.

Hey Paul,
Go to http://www.mpbrakes.com/
I have not been there lately, but drop them a line, they sell nice stuff. I installed one of their power brake boosters and dual master cylinder kits on my 1963 ford f-100, didn't fit right, sent it back out, they made it right and it didn't cost a dime.

Jsimpson,
It may be a bit expensive ($500+), but IMHO, anyone owning ANY diesel pickup should do themselves a favor and install an exhaust brake. These vehicles are just too heavy to race around in traffic and think they will stop like a Toyota Tercel. There are several excellent models on the market and they do WONDERS for brake wear. My wife thought I was just buying another fun part for the truck, but after using the truck around town and then pulling our horse trailer, she wouldn't drive a diesel without the E-brake.
Just my thoughts,
Steve Marley

My rotors could have warped because they were turned slightly off. I have had that happen, too. I go to a friend of mine who is very careful in lining up the rotor to make sure it is true. I am telling you the truth in the fact that when I used the carbons from Auto Zone, my rotors were smooth and BLUE in 10,000 miles. Try them, they might work for someone else, but I have been happy with semi mets.

Smarley; I notice you have an NV4500. I don't believe the exhaust brake will do a thing for my 518!
