I dropped the fuel tank Saturday, and realized just how thankful I am that I added GDP's 2 micron fuel filter. It's disappointing that Chrysler had known about the fuel vent problem for years, and still hadn't fixed it for 2006. It's even more disappointing that Chrysler continues to void injector/fuel system warranties due to contaminated fuel!

I received a recall for the problem, but opted to fix it myself. I should have addressed this sooner, but I never expected that it would be this bad. I had ordered the GDP 392 walbro fuel pump kit and the vent kit mod, and finally decided to put both of those on at the same time... and to address the recall.

This is how I found the tank when I dropped it out of the truck. The only areas of major dust/dirt/mud accumulation were around the two open vent connections on each end of the tank, and around the sending unit in the center of the tank.

Before removing the sending unit, I had to clean about 3/8" of grime from around the sealing ring.

This is a closer picture of dirt that had accumulated around one of the vents.

And finally, a close up picture of one of the barbs... perhaps the most disturbing picture of all!

I've used my truck over the past year, but have never done "serious" offroading. I've never been in extremely dusty terrain, nor have I been in deep water, mud, etc. Truck just turned over 28,000 miles.

If anyone else has been procrastinating taking care of this issue, I hope this is motivation! Well, I better get back to cleaning... Eric

they still haven't done anything about it on the 07's either. Luckily, I installed my GDP kit while the truck is still new and added a piece of hose. I think I avoided it ending up like yours. I'm sure it was headed that way though.

anything to save a buck #@$%!

Just a question... If you do not receive the recall can you still have the repairs done under warranty. Or do I have to go and rattle some cages at my dealership????

The recall just puts a 6" hose on the barbs. For less than $10 and 10 minutes of work, you can put hoses and filters on them. Why mess with the dealer?

I did my own fix right after getting the truck after reading about the issue here. When I got my recall letter, took the truck to my dealer, and said " Make this go away" They said that the recall needs to be done, I told them what I had done, they had a mechanic roll under and check and checked the filter and said I was better off than the recall. They wrote up the paper work, I signed it and went on my way.

You not only need to clean the vents, but add a piece of rubber line to both vents as well. I plan on using a vacuum "tee" connector to connect both of the vents, and adding a small filter as others have done. Simply cleaning the vents won't address the root cause of the problem... --Eric

Will GDP 2 micron set up take care of any issues, or should I think about cleaning the vents as well?
Although the 2 micron should take care of any issues I would still do the fix. If the dealer takes a sample of fuel from the tank and it's dirty, DC will void any remaining warrantee on the fuel system. Not worth the chance for a 10 minute $10 fix IMHO.

Guess it depends how bad it is already. After seeing mine, I'm glad I opted to drop the tank and clean things out, but just adding the lines would surely help some. Notice from my pictures, there was already a considerable amount of contamination that had accumulated inside the barbs... hopefully, yours isn't nearly as bad as mine! --Eric

The 07 tank does not have the same shape on top as I recall.

Wow Eric, your tank was quite a bit dirtier than mine, but I don't offroad.

I connected both rollover valves to a tee and then put a filter near the fuel filler tube. I also added the vent kit at the same time and put in my Walbro pump with a 2-micron filter.
