I dropped the fuel tank Saturday, and realized just how thankful I am that I added GDP's 2 micron fuel filter. It's disappointing that Chrysler had known about the fuel vent problem for years, and still hadn't fixed it for 2006. It's even more disappointing that Chrysler continues to void injector/fuel system warranties due to contaminated fuel!
I received a recall for the problem, but opted to fix it myself. I should have addressed this sooner, but I never expected that it would be this bad. I had ordered the GDP 392 walbro fuel pump kit and the vent kit mod, and finally decided to put both of those on at the same time... and to address the recall.

This is how I found the tank when I dropped it out of the truck. The only areas of major dust/dirt/mud accumulation were around the two open vent connections on each end of the tank, and around the sending unit in the center of the tank.

Before removing the sending unit, I had to clean about 3/8" of grime from around the sealing ring.

This is a closer picture of dirt that had accumulated around one of the vents.

And finally, a close up picture of one of the barbs... perhaps the most disturbing picture of all!
I've used my truck over the past year, but have never done "serious" offroading. I've never been in extremely dusty terrain, nor have I been in deep water, mud, etc. Truck just turned over 28,000 miles.
If anyone else has been procrastinating taking care of this issue, I hope this is motivation! Well, I better get back to cleaning... Eric
