Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I feel like lighting my truck on fire

I just tried to install the main engine seal, I tried for about an hour. I think it's just wonderful how the hole and the crank don't line up. Anyway the seal now looks like modern art. $28 bye bye. I'm going to get another one tomorrow. I have to have it running by tomorrow morning. I'm going to file a BIG chamfer on it, and use a deburr tool to put a BIG chamfer on the hole. And if it doesn't work I'll be going away for a while to Shady Acres so I can visit all my new friends.

You make me remember when I did my KDP fix, I put the seal in with the case on the bench and I can just imagine what it's like on the truck.

Don't know if this would help, put seal in ziploc bag and put in freezer for a while, then before removing from freezer use heat gun or blow drier to warm cover. Maybe by shrinking one some and expanding the other it may go together a little easier. Don't use flame to warm cover!:--) Hope this helps.

The easiest way to set your truck on fire is to hook up a gauge without disconnecting the batteries... .



and don't use electrical tape as this tends to stop wire meltdowns. Good luck

Check out this thread. There is a good way to install the seal using bolts and washers. Just curious if you bought the seal and driver kit from Cummins.

How many miles on your truck before the seal started to leak?

I'm getting ready to install a SBC clutch and was wondering if I should replace the seal or not.

It has 120k miles on it. I'm gonna go try to tackle it right now.

I was able to do it, I used the 4 bolts that hold the harmonic balancer on, and the insertion ring thing they gave me. The edge of the bolts fit perfectly on it.



However, it's still leaking. I believe this is because the hole is aprox. . 020 out of center to the crank I really wonder why it would be off so much, if it was made that way or if something could have moved.

I wonder if the cover is off center and removeing it and resealing it would help, what a PITA. Good Luck

By reading about all the grief you are having, I assume you are trying the front crank seal. IMHO you are better off to remove the front tin cover and install the seal on the bench where you can put some support behind it.



I have done this on the engine and I have also bent the tin cover this way.



Deezul you are correct, if you remove the front cover and do it, the seal will self center on the crankshaft. --- A Johnson



P. S. I might try the harmonic bolt thing next time and watch real close for bending of the tin cover.
