I Finally Did It...

I changed out the ATF from the Getrag today and refilled with Mobile 1 5w-30. Now I can finally fit in with everyone else. I also installed a fast cooler lexan cover like JFitzgerald did. Turned out pretty slick! I did notice a bit of an improvement in the shifting, hope this helps the transmission make it to 300k.

Ah why'd ya go and do that, I was looking up to you in that catagory. I was thinking about trying some ATF plus 1 quart in my getrag, since you've gone so long with it. At least to see how she liked it. Then if she didnt just replace it with 5W30. Let us know how it likes it, keep us updated. Bill

I like the window a lot, since otherwise I could not keep an eye on the oil level after overfilling. 212K with no rebuild? That makes me feel good.

If you'd like to give the ATF a try, I'd say go for it. When I had the PTO cover off, everything looked real good and had very minimal play. I kind of thought the ATF is a thin enough oil that it may have kept the old Getrag clean. At least that's my thoery. The best thing I liked about the ATF, was after draining, any metallic particles showed up like the difference between night and day. After 250 miles of driving, I haven't noticed any extreme difference with the 5w-30. Heck, down the road I may go back to ATF if this stuff doesn't work out. For the record, no rebuild on this transmission, and 180,000 miles on ATF, 212,000+ overall miles. This must be one of the few good ones made. #ad
