My 2014.......

I was feeling left out since I never got a CEL in 4000 miles. This morning I left Laughlin, NV headed home to MN towing my 15K fifth wheel. If you are familiar with the area there is a very long grade pulling out of Laughlin towards Kingman, AZ. I'm not sure of the exact distance but it's about 10 miles long with a 6% grade.

I was remarking to my wife how easily the new truck pulled the grade compared to my earlier Cummins powered trucks. Right about that time I got a CEL.

I kept driving and a couple of hundred miles down the road while stopped for fuel I hooked up my scanner and got a U3017. I cleared the code and it didn't come back.

I don't have my service manual yet, anyone know what a code U3017 is? I'm guessing it might be one of the codes fixed with the latest flashes.

Possible causes LOW COOLANT LEVEL
(RECENTLY) REPROGRAMMED POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
(RECENTLY) REPROGRAMMED BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)
COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)

Thanks for the info Bob. Nothing has been reprogrammed since I got the truck. I do need to take it in for the rear fuel heater to be turned on.

I checked my coolant level cold before we left and it was right on the full mark. It easily could have something to do with cooling, I really had it working hard and the fan was on most of the way up the hill. The outside temp was only 72 degrees. If it happens again I'll leave the code in there for the dealer when I get home.

That hill is a one of a kind which they often use for truck towing shootouts.

That grade has tested many different manufactures trucks that had been camouflaged so you couldn't make out the new design. I personally saw the new 2nd Gen trucks in 93 being tested while I was in Laughlin boating at 121* ambient temperature. They were probably going through overheating trials but I only saw a camouflaged truck.

did you by chance happen to check the engine temp while climbing the hill? That grade is the proving grounds for real trucks...:)

I've run that hill in the '94,it goes and goes

The temp display on the EVIC went as high as 217 degrees and the oil temp went up to 226 degrees. Most of the time coolant temp stayed around 213 to 215. I was only pulling 15K with a truck rated to tow around 28K! On level ground with the same load it is usually around 190 degrees.

Well, since I reset my CEL I've continued towing my fifth wheel home. Not home yet but I've gone well over 1000 miles since I first posted about my problem.

The CEL has never come back. I've towed up many grades and driven in a variety of temperatures. Whatever caused it seems to be gone or extremely intermittent.

Had a fire truck come on today with that code. Did the bcm reconfigure and iirc a PCM flash about a week ago. Cleared it going to have some one drive it a bit. I am expecting that is all it will take

I used to live in Golden Valley at the top of that hill and worked in Laughlin. Have been up and down it several times since buying my TT and 2010 Goat. No problems yet. ;)
